Navigating August Travel Changes
Southern Railway is gearing up for a busy August with a series of announcements aimed at managing passenger rush and accommodating ongoing infrastructure projects. For travellers, this means paying close attention to a mix of special festival trains and temporary
operational changes affecting major terminals like Chennai Egmore. The primary driver for many of these adjustments is the redevelopment work at Chennai Egmore station, which necessitates diverting, short-terminating, or changing the originating station for several key services between August 5 and August 20, 2026. In parallel, special trains have been introduced to handle the festive rush for Onam, connecting major cities across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka. This combination of planned upgrades and festive demand makes it crucial for passengers to verify every detail before booking.
Chennai Egmore Redevelopment: Key Service Changes
The most significant impact on August travel stems from the redevelopment of Chennai Egmore. From August 5 to August 20, several express trains will not operate from this major hub. Instead, services will be short-terminated or will originate from alternate stations like Tambaram and Mambalam. For instance, trains arriving from Thanjavur (Uzhavan Express), Mangaluru, Kollam (Ananthapuri Express), and Salem will terminate at Tambaram between August 5 and 19. Similarly, the corresponding return services will originate from Tambaram instead of Chennai Egmore from August 6 to 20. One train, the Tiruchirappalli-Chennai Egmore Rockfort Express, will terminate at Mambalam. Passengers booked on these services must make arrangements to board at these alternate stations, as the trains will not serve Chennai Egmore during this period.
Alternate Routes and Diversions
Beyond just changing the boarding points, some trains are being completely rerouted. The Ahmedabad-Tiruchchirappalli Weekly Express Special (Train No. 09419) on August 6 and 13 will be diverted via Renigunta, Tiruttani, and Chengalpattu, skipping its usual stops at Arakkonam, Perambur, Chennai Egmore, and Tambaram. A special stop has been added at Tiruttani to compensate. The return train (No. 09420) on August 9 and 16 will follow a similarly diverted path. These diversions are critical for passengers to note, as they affect both the route and the scheduled stops. Always check the latest announcements on the official NTES app or the Indian Railways website before heading to the station.
Festival Special Trains for Onam
To cater to the Onam festival rush, Southern Railway has also announced several special weekly trains connecting key destinations. Services between Mangaluru Central and Chennai Egmore, as well as between Thiruvananthapuram Central and Tambaram, will run through August and September. These trains provide much-needed extra capacity during a peak travel season. For example, the Thiruvananthapuram-Tambaram specials will offer four services in each direction. Bookings for these special services opened in early July, and passengers are advised to reserve their tickets well in advance due to the high demand expected during the festival period. Additionally, Central Railway has announced special services between Mumbai (LTT) and Velankanni for the annual festival there, with trains running in late August and early September.
Booking Your Tickets and Managing Your Journey
Booking for these special and rescheduled services is available through the usual channels: Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters and the IRCTC website or mobile app. For return journeys, especially on high-demand routes, it is advisable to book as early as possible. Given the dynamic nature of these schedules, passengers should frequently check for updates. A significant recent change that offers more flexibility is the new rule for modifying boarding points. Passengers can now change their boarding station up to 30 minutes before the train's departure, which can be done through the IRCTC portal or at PRS counters. This is particularly useful if you find it easier to board at a subsequent station rather than the one you originally booked from, a common scenario in cities with multiple stations.
