YUVIKA: Igniting Young Minds
One of ISRO's flagship initiatives is the 'YUva VIgyani KAryakram', or YUVIKA (Young Scientist Programme). This program is specifically designed to "catch them young" by imparting basic knowledge on space science and technology to school students. YUVIKA is a two-week
residential programme for students who have completed Class 9. Selected students get the incredible opportunity to visit major ISRO centres, attend lectures by eminent scientists, and participate in hands-on activities like model rocketry, CANSAT experiments, and DIY kit assemblies. The selection process is merit-based, considering Class 8 marks, performance in an online quiz, and participation in science fairs and Olympiads, with special weightage given to students from rural areas.
START: A University-Level Kickstart
For university students, ISRO offers the Space Science and Technology Awareness Training (START) program. This is an introductory-level online training course aimed at final-year undergraduate and postgraduate students of physical sciences and technology. The curriculum, delivered by scientists from ISRO and academia, covers a wide range of topics, including Astronomy, Heliophysics, and Instrumentation.
