The period from October to May is widely considered the best time to visit Neil Island. Autumn, in particular, brings pleasant weather with clearer skies and calmer seas, making it ideal for beach hopping and water activities. This season follows the heavy
monsoons, leaving the island's lush greenery exceptionally vibrant. It's a sweet spot before the peak tourist rush of December and January, allowing for a more peaceful and intimate experience of the island's natural splendour.
Embracing the 'Slow Island' Life
Shaheed Dweep is noticeably quieter and smaller than its more famous neighbour, Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep). Known locally as the 'vegetable bowl' of the Andamans for its farming, the island maintains a relaxed, village-like atmosphere. The entire island is only about 13.7 square kilometres, making it easy to explore on a rented bicycle or scooter. This slow pace is the island's core identity, encouraging visitors to unwind, breathe deeply, and sync with the rhythm of nature rather than rushing through a checklist of sights.
Bharatpur Beach: The Hub of Activity
Located just half a kilometre from the jetty, Bharatpur Beach is often the first stop for visitors. It is the island's primary hub for water sports. Its shallow, calm turquoise waters and rich coral reefs make it perfect for activities like glass-bottom boat rides, snorkelling, and even scuba diving, which is exclusively offered here on the island. Despite being the most visited beach, its long shoreline provides ample space to relax. You’ll also find numerous stalls selling snacks and refreshing coconut water, along with convenient changing room facilities.
Laxmanpur Beach: A Sunset Spectacle
Famed as the best sunset viewpoint on the island, Laxmanpur Beach on the western shore is a must-visit. The beach is a vast stretch of white sand, littered with shells and dead corals, making it more suited for scenic walks than swimming. Its main draw is the evening sky, which bursts into shades of orange and pink as the sun dips below the horizon. A short walk away lies Laxmanpur Beach II, where low tide reveals the famous Natural Bridge, a stunning rock formation also known as the Howrah Bridge. Time your visit for low tide to explore the rock pools teeming with small marine life.
Sitapur Beach: The Serene Sunrise Point
At the southern tip of the island, Sitapur Beach offers a tranquil counterpoint to Laxmanpur's sunset crowds. Known as 'Sunrise Beach', it's the ideal spot to start your day. The beach is set in a picturesque cove, surrounded by lush greenery on three sides, which opens up to a stunning sea view. Because it's exposed to the open sea, the currents can be strong, making it less suitable for swimming. Its relative seclusion makes it perfect for quiet reflection, photography, and enjoying a peaceful morning walk along its golden sands.
Practical Tips for Your Island Hop
Reaching Shaheed Dweep involves a ferry journey. While government ferries run, most travellers opt for private catamarans like Makruzz or Green Ocean. There is often no direct private ferry from Port Blair; the most reliable route is taking a ferry from Port Blair to Havelock Island (approx. 90 minutes) and then a connecting ferry to Neil Island (approx. 45-60 minutes). Once on the island, accommodation ranges from budget-friendly guesthouses to comfortable resorts. Booking ferries and stays in advance is highly recommended, especially if travelling during peak times.
