Why the Major Disruption?
Chandigarh Railway Station is in the middle of a massive redevelopment project aimed at transforming it into a world-class facility. To facilitate this upgrade, the Ambala Division of Northern Railway has announced a 36-day power and traffic block from
September 10 to October 15, 2026. This extended block is necessary for critical construction work, including erecting a new through-roof structure and dismantling the old foot-over-bridge. The work, which has been divided into three 12-day phases, will impact different platforms and lines sequentially to allow parts of the station to remain operational. While the upgrades promise long-term benefits, the immediate future means significant inconvenience for daily commuters and long-distance travellers alike.
Which Trains Are Affected?
The disruption is extensive. While the headline highlights 54 trains skipping the city, the overall impact is much broader, affecting a total of 442 individual train trips over the 36-day period. This includes outright cancellations, partial cancellations (short-terminations), diversions, and platform changes. Twelve train services will be completely cancelled for the duration of the block, including key routes like the Chandigarh-Amritsar Express and the Delhi-Kalka service. Additionally, many other trains, such as the Ajmer-Chandigarh Garib Rath and the Udaipur-Chandigarh Express, will be 'short-terminated' or 'short-originated' from Ambala Cantt. This means they will not travel the Ambala-Chandigarh leg of their journey. Finally, a total of 76 trains, including the Shatabdi and Vande Bharat services, will see their platforms changed at various points during the block.
First Step: Verify Your Train's Status
Before you leave for the station, your most crucial step is to verify the current status of your train. Do not assume your scheduled service will run as normal. Indian Railways provides several official channels for this information. The most reliable options include the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) mobile app and website, which provide live updates on train schedules, cancellations, and diversions. You can also call the Rail Madad helpline at number 139 for automated and manual assistance. Station enquiry counters will also have the latest information, but checking in advance online or via the app will save you a potentially wasted trip.
Cancelled Ticket? Here’s How Refunds Work
If your train is cancelled by the Railways, you are entitled to a full refund. For tickets booked online via the IRCTC website or app, the refund process is automatic. The full fare will be credited back to the source account from which the payment was made, and you do not need to file a Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR). For counter tickets (those purchased in person at a railway station), you will need to surrender the ticket at a reservation counter to claim your refund. This must typically be done within a specified period from the train's scheduled departure date, so it is best to act promptly.
Finding Alternative Travel Routes
With numerous trains not reaching Chandigarh, passengers will need to get creative. The primary alternative hub during this period will be Ambala Cantt railway station. For many affected services, passengers will have to travel between Chandigarh and Ambala by other means, such as buses or taxis, to begin or end their train journey. To ease the inconvenience, Railways has also designated Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (Mohali) as a temporary stop for eight long-distance trains. Beyond trains, consider inter-state bus services from ISBT-17 and ISBT-43 in Chandigarh, which offer extensive connectivity to Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh. For those travelling longer distances, flying from Chandigarh's Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport remains an option, though likely at a higher cost.
