Adopt a Sattvic and Light Diet
Ayurveda suggests that our digestive fire (Agni) is naturally weaker during the monsoon. The traditional Shravan diet, which is sattvic or pure, aligns perfectly with this. Focus on foods that are light and easy to digest. This includes fresh fruits,
bottle gourd (lauki), potatoes, and millets like barnyard millet (samak rice) and buckwheat (kuttu). Many devotees observe fasts, especially on Mondays, which gives the digestive system a much-needed rest. It is traditionally recommended to avoid non-vegetarian food, onions, and garlic during this month. This practice helps reduce the load on your gut and promotes mental clarity.
Hydrate Mindfully with Warm Fluids
While the weather is humid, staying hydrated is crucial. However, instead of cold drinks that can dampen your digestive fire, opt for warm beverages. Herbal teas made with ingredients like ginger, tulsi, and fennel are excellent for boosting immunity and aiding digestion. Warm, boiled water is also recommended. Dairy products like milk and buttermilk are encouraged, but heavy or very cold curd is sometimes avoided as it can be difficult to digest during this season. Fresh coconut water is another great option for natural hydration and electrolytes.
Embrace Indoor Movement and Yoga
The persistent rain can disrupt outdoor exercise routines, but staying active is key to feeling energetic. This is the perfect time to explore indoor workouts. Simple yoga asanas like Trikonasana (Triangle Pose) and Bhujangasana (Cobra Stretch) can improve flexibility and strength. Bodyweight exercises such as squats, push-ups, and planks require no equipment and are highly effective for maintaining fitness. Even activities like skipping rope or dancing to your favourite music can serve as great cardio workouts, keeping you active and cheerful within the comfort of your home.
Prioritise Personal and Home Hygiene
The high humidity during monsoon can lead to an increase in skin and fungal infections. It is important to pay extra attention to personal hygiene. Bathe daily and ensure your skin, especially your feet, is kept dry. Use a gentle cleanser and exfoliate once or twice a week to remove dead skin cells and prevent clogged pores. Don't skip sunscreen on cloudy days, as UV rays can still penetrate the cloud cover. At home, combat the dampness and musty smells by burning camphor or dhoop, which also helps create a serene atmosphere for prayer and meditation.
Focus on Spiritual Wellness and Mindfulness
Shravan is fundamentally a month for spiritual growth and introspection. Complement your lifestyle changes with practices that calm the mind. Dedicate a small part of your day to meditation or chanting mantras like 'Om Namah Shivaya'. This practice of self-control and devotion is central to the observance of Shravan. Reducing exposure to stress and negative thoughts, and focusing on kindness and honesty, can enhance your sense of well-being. Even a few minutes of quiet reflection can help you feel more centred and peaceful amidst the sound of the falling rain.
