The Silent Subscription Creep
Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has changed how India transacts, and its AutoPay feature is a prime example of its convenience. With a one-time approval, you can set up recurring payments for everything from OTT platform subscriptions and mobile recharges
to loan EMIs and mutual fund SIPs. This 'set it and forget it' model is designed to make life easier, ensuring you never miss a due date. However, this same convenience can become a double-edged sword. It's easy to sign up for a service, approve a mandate, and then forget about it entirely, especially after a free trial ends or when you stop using the service. These small, recurring debits often go unnoticed, slowly but surely causing your bank balance to drop without a clear reason.
Understanding the UPI Mandate
When you approve an automatic payment, you are creating a 'UPI mandate'. This is a digital standing instruction you give your bank through a UPI app, authorising a specific merchant to debit a certain amount at a set frequency. Governed by rules from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), this system is built to be secure, requiring your UPI PIN for the initial setup. The key thing to remember is that deleting a merchant's app from your phone does not cancel the mandate. The instruction remains active with your bank, and the debits will continue as scheduled until you formally revoke the approval. This is the most common reason people find themselves paying for services they no longer use.
How to Find Your Active Mandates
Finding all your active UPI mandates is the first step to regaining control. The process is simple and can be done directly within the UPI apps you use. While the exact labels may differ slightly, the path is generally similar across platforms like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm. Typically, you need to open the app, navigate to your profile section, and look for an option named ‘AutoPay’, ‘Mandates’, or ‘Subscriptions’. This section will display a list of all your 'Live' or active mandates. It will show you the merchant's name, the authorised amount, and the payment frequency, giving you a clear picture of all the automatic payments you have approved.
Your Guide to Pausing or Cancelling Mandates
Once you've found the list of mandates, you have the power to manage them. For each active mandate, UPI apps generally provide two main options: Pause or Cancel (sometimes called 'Revoke' or 'Delete'). Pausing is a temporary measure, useful if you want to suspend payments for a short period without cancelling a service entirely. Cancelling, on the other hand, permanently revokes the merchant's authority to debit your account for that specific mandate. To cancel, simply select the mandate you no longer need and choose the 'Cancel' or 'Revoke' option. You will be prompted to enter your UPI PIN to confirm the cancellation, which serves as a final security check. The status of the mandate should then update to 'Cancelled' or 'Revoked'.
Make It a Financial Habit
Reviewing your UPI mandates shouldn't be a one-time task. Think of it as a regular financial health check-up. Set a reminder to go through your active mandates once every few months. This simple habit ensures you are only paying for services you actively use and value. This review also helps you spot any mandates you don't recognise, which could be a sign of an error or a fraudulent request. By staying on top of your automatic payments, you prevent 'subscription creep' from impacting your budget and ensure there are no unexpected drops in your bank balance at the end of the month. It's a small investment of time that pays significant dividends in financial peace of mind.
