A Faster, More Powerful Booking Engine
The core of the upgrade is a massive boost in performance, addressing the frequent slowdowns and crashes that plagued users, especially during peak hours. The new system can process over 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute, a nearly fivefold increase
from the previous capacity of about 32,000. This enhancement is designed to make the platform more stable, particularly during the high-demand Tatkal reservation window. Furthermore, the upgraded Passenger Reservation System (PRS) can now handle over 40 lakh inquiries per minute, a tenfold jump from the previous 4 lakh. This means faster searches, quicker PNR status checks, and a more responsive system overall, even when millions of users are online simultaneously.
A Cleaner Interface Free of Distractions
One of the most welcome changes is a cleaner, more intuitive user interface. The redesigned website and app do away with many of the elements that previously interrupted the booking process. Passengers will encounter fewer CAPTCHA verifications, which often slowed down reservations at critical moments. The new layout also eliminates unnecessary pop-ups and flashing advertisements, providing a more streamlined and less frustrating path to booking a ticket. This simplified design is not just cosmetic; it is intended to make the entire journey from searching for a train to completing the payment quicker and more seamless.
Smarter Features for Better Planning
The digital refresh introduces several intelligent features that give passengers more control and information. A new fare calendar allows users to compare ticket prices across different dates, helping them find the most economical option for their journey. Another significant improvement is the unified seat availability view. Instead of having to search each travel class (Sleeper, AC 3 Tier, etc.) separately, passengers can now see the availability across all classes on a single screen. The platform also introduces a seat preference option, allowing passengers to select their desired seat type during booking, much like on an airline.
Enhanced Accessibility for All Passengers
Recognizing the diversity of its user base, the new IRCTC platform has been built to be more inclusive. The website will now support multiple Indian languages, making it more accessible to people across the country who may not be comfortable with English. Additionally, the portal simplifies the booking process for various concession categories by integrating services for Divyangjan (persons with disabilities), students, and patients onto a single platform. This centralises processes that were previously separate, making it easier for eligible passengers to avail their concessions without navigating complex procedures.
AI-Powered Security and Fairness
To address long-standing complaints about the fairness of the Tatkal booking system, Indian Railways has also been upgrading its backend with AI-based technology. This AI-powered fraud detection system is designed to identify and block automated bots that ticket agents sometimes use to grab tickets unfairly. By monitoring booking patterns and identifying suspicious activity, such as impossibly fast booking times, the system aims to create a more level playing field for genuine passengers. This move is a direct response to user feedback and is a crucial part of building trust and confidence in the platform's fairness.
