The goal is to grow India's share of the global space economy from around 2% to 8% in the next decade, a target that cannot be met by ISRO alone.

Satellites blanket the Earth, gathering enormous amounts of information that can be used in agriculture, disaster management, urban planning, and finance. Companies like SatSure and Pixxel are hiring data scientists, AI/ML specialists, and geospatial analysts to turn this raw satellite imagery into valuable business insights. These roles require skills in data modelling, remote sensing, and GIS, proving that expertise in data can be a direct route into the space industry, even without a background in aerospace.
Space Law and Finance
As the private sector's role grows, so does the complexity of the rules governing it. This has created a sudden need for a new kind of specialist: the space lawyer. With private companies launching satellites and building rockets, a clear legal framework is essential. Experts are needed to navigate licensing, international treaties, and liability. The establishment of IN-SPACe as a single-window regulatory agency underscores this shift. Alongside legal minds, the industry needs financial professionals to underwrite the high-stakes risks of space ventures, manage investments, and build business models for space-tech startups seeking a slice of the projected $44 billion market.
Advanced Manufacturing and Supply Chains
While ISRO will continue to focus on frontier research, private industry is expected to scale up manufacturing. This requires a new generation of talent in advanced manufacturing, precision engineering, robotics, and industrial automation. Companies are increasingly hiring engineers from the automotive and electronics sectors and reskilling them for the unique demands of space-grade hardware. The ambition to build hundreds of private satellites and multiple launch vehicles domestically means creating a robust supply chain for specialised components, from alloys and chemicals to sensors and semiconductors. This creates opportunities not just for large firms but for a whole ecosystem of MSMEs.
Storytellers and Strategists
In a competitive commercial market, having the best technology isn't enough; you also need to sell it. Space-tech startups need business development managers, marketing experts, and communication professionals to tell their story, attract investment, and win customers. Unlike the government-led era, private companies must compete for talent and capital, making branding and public relations critical functions. As the sector grows, so will the need for people who can translate complex technical achievements into compelling narratives for investors, customers, and the public, proving that you don't need a degree in physics to help India reach for the stars.
