India’s 1983 World Cup-winning captain, Kapil Dev, has graced the silver screen multiple times. One of his most notable cameos was in the 2005 film 'Iqbal', where he played himself, offering encouragement to the aspiring young cricketer played by Shreyas
Talpade. He also made memorable appearances in 'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi' (2004) alongside Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar, and in 'Chain Kulii Ki Main Kulii'. More recently, he appeared in the film based on his own historic victory, '83', where he was seen in the crowd as an audience member, adding a layer of authentic nostalgia to the cinematic retelling of his greatest triumph.
Sunil Gavaskar in Maalamaal
Long before the era of frequent crossovers, legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar made a special guest appearance as himself in the 1988 comedy 'Maalamaal'. The film, starring Naseeruddin Shah, featured a plot where the protagonist had to spend a large fortune in a short time. In a memorable sequence, he organises a cricket match against Gavaskar's team. Ajay Jadeja's Acting Stint
Unlike many others who appeared as themselves, former Indian cricketer Ajay Jadeja took on a substantial acting role in the 2003 thriller 'Khel – No Ordinary Game'. He starred alongside established actors like Sunny Deol and Suniel Shetty, playing one of the main characters. While the film wasn't a blockbuster, Jadeja’s performance was noted, showcasing his comfort in front of the camera in a full-fledged role rather than a simple cameo. Australian fast bowler Brett Lee, known for his immense popularity in India, also took a significant leap into acting. While he made a cameo in the 2009 cricket-themed film 'Victory' alongside other international players, his biggest role came in the 2015 Indo-Australian romantic comedy 'UnIndian'. Lee played the lead role of an Australian teacher who falls for an Indian single mother, played by Tannishtha Chatterjee. The film was a full-fledged acting debut for the cricketer, moving well beyond a simple guest appearance.
The Master Blaster's Brief Appearance
Sachin Tendulkar, the God of Cricket, also had his moment on the big screen. The Master Blaster made a cameo appearance as himself in the 2003 film 'Stumped'. Produced by actress Raveena Tandon, the film's plot was set against the backdrop of the 1999 Kargil War and the Cricket World Cup. Tendulkar's appearance, alongside other cricketers like Kapil Dev, added a touch of authenticity to the film's cricket-centric narrative. While he later starred in his own biographical film, 'Sachin: A Billion Dreams', 'Stumped' remains his only fictional movie cameo.

The 2009 film 'Victory' was a treat for cricket fans, featuring a host of international cricketers in cameo roles. Besides Brett Lee, the film saw appearances from Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh and a number of international stars like Mike Hussey, Jason Gillespie, and Sanath Jayasuriya. The players appeared as themselves in the movie, which starred Harman Baweja as a cricketer on a journey of redemption. These appearances helped lend an air of realism to the film's cricketing world, making it a unique crossover event.
