Understanding the Free Visa Initiative
The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) has launched a new promotional programme specifically for the Indian market. Under this scheme, the department will cover the entire cost of a UAE entry visa for eligible Indian tourists,
effectively making it free for the traveller. It is important to note this is not a universal visa-free travel arrangement for all Indian citizens. Instead, it is a targeted tourism initiative designed to encourage longer stays in the capital. The programme runs for a limited period, from August 1 to October 31, 2026, and is capped at the first 20,000 visas issued.
The Crucial Booking Checks
The term "free" comes with several important conditions that travellers must meet, which constitute the core 'booking checks'. To qualify, the trip must be booked as a package through a participating travel partner or an online travel agency (OTA). Direct applications or flight-only bookings will not be eligible. The mandatory requirements for the package include a return flight ticket originating from India and a hotel stay of at least three consecutive nights in Abu Dhabi. Booking only a flight or only a hotel separately does not qualify for the free visa offer. The initiative is structured to boost tourism within the emirate, rewarding travellers who plan a short holiday rather than just a brief transit.
Who is Eligible to Apply?
Eligibility for this specific offer is straightforward but strict. Applicants must be Indian passport holders whose journey originates in India. The booking must be made through official participating travel agencies that are enrolled in the programme. This offer is separate from other UAE visa rules, such as the visa-on-arrival facility available to Indian passport holders who have a valid visa or residence permit from the US, UK, or EU. This programme is a distinct promotional offer tied to a qualifying holiday package, not an immigration policy change.
How to Secure Your Free Visa
The application process is handled entirely by the travel provider. Travellers do not apply for the visa themselves through an official government portal. The first step is to find a participating online travel agency or local travel partner. Once you book a qualifying package (return flights from India + minimum three nights in an Abu Dhabi hotel), the travel partner will handle the visa processing on your behalf. They work with destination management companies approved by DCT Abu Dhabi to have the visa fee, approximately AED 285, waived or reimbursed. Given the 20,000 visa cap, it is advisable to book early within the promotional window to avoid disappointment.
Making the Most of Your Stay
The requirement of a three-night stay makes this offer perfect for a long weekend or a short city break. Abu Dhabi offers a diverse range of attractions that can easily fill a few days. Visitors can explore cultural landmarks like the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island. For thrill-seekers, Yas Island is home to world-class theme parks. Beyond the main attractions, you can enjoy the city's waterfront promenades, indulge in its diverse culinary scene, or take a trip into the desert. This initiative encourages travellers to look beyond the airport and experience what the emirate has to offer.
