More than half of all plant species rely on animals to disperse their seeds. This ancient partnership, known as zoochory, is fundamental to healthy ecosystems. It happens when an animal eats a fruit and later excretes the seed intact, often far from the parent
plant. This journey is critical. It allows plants to colonize new areas, escape competition with their parents, and find better ground for germination. In tropical rainforests, this process is especially dominant, with up to 90% of tree species depending on animal couriers. Without these animals, many forests would struggle to regenerate or maintain their rich diversity.
Meet the Unsung Ground Crew
While birds are vital, a diverse team of terrestrial animals does much of the heavy lifting. Large mammals are the undisputed champions of long-distance dispersal for plants with big seeds. Animals like tapirs, elephants, and monkeys have wide mouths that allow them to swallow large fruits whole. They can carry these seeds over vast distances, depositing them in new locations complete with a dose of fertilizer from their dung. The Baird's Tapir, for example, is known to consume fruits from over 50 different plant species, passing most seeds undamaged. Even carnivores like coyotes and foxes play a part by eating fruit and dispersing seeds in their scat. This variety of dispersers is key, as different animal species create a complex and resilient network of seed movement.
A New Discovery Underfoot
The list of ground-based seed movers is longer than scientists once thought. A recent study has shed light on an even more overlooked group of dispersers. Research has now documented that at least 51 different invertebrate species—including insects, worms, and snails—can consume seeds and excrete them while still viable. This was observed across 186 different plant taxa, revealing a widespread dispersal system happening right on the forest floor. This discovery adds another layer to our understanding, suggesting that even the smallest creatures contribute to the forest's ability to regenerate, a role that may be especially important where larger animals are in decline.
The High Cost of a Quieter Forest
The disappearance of these animal 'gardeners' has profound consequences. The ongoing loss of animal species, a phenomenon known as defaunation, is severing these critical plant-animal links. Research shows that the decline of birds and mammals has already slashed the ability of plants to keep pace with climate change by 60%. When large-bodied animals are lost to hunting or habitat destruction, plants with large seeds are often the first to suffer, unable to move their offspring. This doesn't just reduce plant diversity; it can also affect an ecosystem's ability to store carbon, as many large-seeded trees are also dense, high-carbon species. In essence, losing these animals makes forests less resilient and less able to recover from disturbances like logging and fire.
