What is a UK eVisa?
A UK eVisa is a digital record of your permission to enter and stay in the United Kingdom. Instead of a physical sticker (vignette) in your passport or a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP), your visa status is now stored online and linked directly to your passport.
This digital record contains your identity details and the conditions of your immigration status, such as whether you can work or study. The main goal is to create a more secure and streamlined immigration system that reduces the risk of lost or fraudulent physical documents.
How the Application Process Changes for Indians
For Indian travellers, the core visa application process remains largely familiar but with a key digital shift at the end. You still need to determine the correct visa type for your trip (e.g., tourism, business, study), complete the application form on the official GOV.UK website, and pay the required fees. You will also still need to attend a biometrics appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) in India to provide your fingerprints and a photograph. The biggest change is that you will no longer leave your passport at the VAC for a sticker. Instead, if your application is successful, you will receive a notification to create a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) online account, where you can view your eVisa. This means your permission to travel is entirely digital.
Your New Pre-Travel Checklist
With the move to eVisas, your travel preparation needs a digital update. First, once your visa is approved, create your UKVI account immediately and check that all your personal details, like your name and photo, are correct. Crucially, ensure your eVisa is linked to the passport you will be travelling with. If you renew your passport, you must update the details in your UKVI account before you fly. It is also wise to carry digital and even printed copies of your UKVI account profile page, along with the email confirming your visa approval, as a backup. Airlines will verify your immigration status digitally before you board, so having your details correct is essential to avoid being denied travel.
The Difference Between an eVisa and an ETA
It's important for Indian citizens not to confuse the new eVisa with the UK's Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). The ETA is a digital pre-travel clearance for nationals of countries who do not need a visa for short stays, such as citizens of the US, Canada, Australia, and EU countries. Indian passport holders are not eligible for the ETA scheme. You must still apply for a standard UK visa relevant to your purpose of travel. The result of that successful application is what is now issued as an eVisa instead of a passport sticker.
Benefits and Things to Watch For
The primary benefits of the eVisa system are security and convenience. A digital visa cannot be lost, stolen, or easily tampered with like a physical document. It also allows you to prove your right to work or rent in the UK by generating a secure 'share code' directly from your online account. However, the transition is not without potential issues. Travellers must be diligent about keeping their passport details updated in their UKVI account to avoid problems at the border. As with any digital system, there can be technical glitches, so having backup copies of your approval and UKVI profile is recommended.
