Pragyan Ojha: The Insider's Choice
Pragyan Ojha is perhaps the most logical and immediate candidate for the top job. Following Ajit Agarkar’s departure, Ojha, who was already on the selection panel, was appointed as the interim chairman. This puts him in a prime position, as he is already familiar
with the current crop of players, the team's long-term vision, and the inner workings of the selection process. Having played 24 Tests, the crafty left-arm spinner is currently the most senior member of the committee. According to BCCI tradition, the selector with the most Test caps automatically becomes the chairman. His administrative experience, including representing the Indian Cricketers' Association in the IPL Governing Council, further strengthens his profile. Ojha’s promotion to the permanent role would signal continuity and stability. However, his chairmanship hinges on who the BCCI appoints to fill the vacant selector's spot. If the new appointee has played more than 24 Tests, Ojha would have to relinquish the chairmanship.
Parthiv Patel: The Domestic Guru
A name gaining significant traction in cricket circles is former wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel. Having retired from all forms of cricket in 2020, he comfortably meets the BCCI's five-year cooling-off period and is a strong contender for the vacant selector position from the West Zone. This is where it gets interesting: Parthiv has 25 Test caps to his name. Should he be appointed, his seniority over Pragyan Ojha (24 Tests) would automatically make him the new chairman. Parthiv’s biggest strength is his deep and current knowledge of India's domestic circuit. He was a stalwart in first-class cricket and, since retirement, has worked as a talent scout for Mumbai Indians and a coach for Gujarat Titans. This experience gives him a granular understanding of the talent pipeline beyond the established international stars. Appointing Patel would suggest the BCCI wants a chairman with a sharp eye for unearthing talent and rewarding domestic performance, bridging the gap between the Ranji Trophy and Team India.
Virender Sehwag: The Fearless Disruptor
When it comes to legendary status and sheer impact, few can match Virender Sehwag. The thought of the man who revolutionized opening in Test cricket taking charge of selection is a thrilling prospect for many fans. His philosophy would almost certainly be built around backing aggressive, match-winning players who are not afraid to take risks. With 104 Tests under his belt, his eligibility and cricketing credentials are unquestionable. Sehwag also has administrative experience, having served as a mentor and director of cricket operations for Punjab Kings in the IPL. However, his candidacy comes with a significant caveat. In recent interviews, Sehwag has openly stated his reluctance to take on a demanding, year-round role with the national team, citing a desire to spend more time with his family. While he remains open to shorter stints like an IPL mentorship, the chief selector's job is an intense commitment. While his name is often part of the conversation, his appointment remains a long shot unless he has a change of heart about the demands of the job.
