In a move to boost tourism, the Sri Lankan government has introduced a significant policy update effective from May 25, 2026. Indian tourists are now eligible for a free Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for stays of up to 30 days. This scheme applies
to citizens from 40 countries, with India being a key focus due to its status as Sri Lanka's largest tourism source market. While the visa fee has been waived, it is crucial to understand that obtaining the ETA online before your arrival is still a mandatory requirement. You cannot simply arrive with your passport and expect entry. The good news is the application process itself is now free of charge.
Key Features of the 30-Day Free Visa
The free tourist ETA comes with several traveller-friendly features. It is valid for a 30-day stay and, notably, permits a double-entry facility. This means you can enter Sri Lanka, potentially visit another nearby country like the Maldives, and re-enter Sri Lanka within the original 30-day validity period. This flexibility is a significant advantage for those planning a multi-destination trip in the region. The validity starts from the date of your first arrival. If you wish to stay longer than the allocated 30 days, you can apply for an extension upon payment of the standard applicable fees.
How to Apply for Your Free ETA
The process for securing your free ETA is entirely online and straightforward. First, you must visit the official Department of Immigration & Emigration ETA website. Be cautious of unofficial third-party sites. On the official portal, you will need to fill out the application form with your personal details, passport information, and travel plans, including your proposed arrival date and accommodation details. The system will automatically recognize your nationality as Indian and waive the fee. Though some reports mention a new e-visa portal managed by VFS Global, the free tourist ETA for 30 days is processed through the established government site. After submission, you will receive an ETA approval notice via email, usually within 24 to 48 hours. It is advisable to apply at least a few days before your travel date.
Beyond the 30-Day Tourist Visa
While the free 30-day ETA is a major draw, Sri Lanka has also revamped its entire visa system to offer a wider range of options for different types of travellers, managed through a new e-visa platform. This new system, distinct from the free ETA, includes various categories such as six-month double-entry tourist visas and even multiple-entry visas valid for one, two, five, or ten years. Business visas have similar long-term options. These paid visas offer greater flexibility for frequent visitors or those planning extended stays. The introduction of these categories streamlines the process for long-term visitors, who previously had to navigate a more complex approval system.

This policy shift solidifies Sri Lanka’s position as one of the most accessible international destinations for Indians. By removing the visa fee, a common friction point for budget-conscious travellers, the island nation becomes even more attractive for spontaneous getaways and short holidays.
