Skandagiri: The Walk Above the Clouds
Skandagiri, also known as Kalavara Durga, is famous for one magical reason: the feeling of walking above a sea of clouds. The sunrise from its peak at around 1,450 metres often reveals a thick blanket of white clouds below, making it a photographer's
dream. The trek itself is about 8 kilometres long (round trip) and is considered to be of moderate difficulty, suitable for beginners with a decent fitness level. The trail begins at the Papagni Mutt and winds through rocky and sometimes slippery terrain, taking about two to two-and-a-half hours to ascend. Along the way, you’ll encounter ruins of an 18th-century fort once used by Tipu Sultan. To ensure safety and prevent overcrowding, booking your spot for the sunrise trek (which usually starts around 4 AM) is mandatory through the Karnataka Eco-Tourism portal. On-the-spot registration is not allowed, so be sure to plan and book in advance, especially for weekends.
Savandurga: The Monolithic Challenge
Savandurga is a beast of a hill, recognised as one of Asia's largest monoliths. This trek is for those seeking a more physically demanding challenge. It comprises two main trails: Karigudda (the black hill) and Biligudda (the white hill). The Biligudda trail is more popular and clearly marked, starting near the Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple. The trek is rated moderate to difficult due to its steep, bare rock inclines that require good grip and stamina. The ascent can take about two to three hours. There are no food stalls or reliable water sources on the trail, so carrying at least two to three litres of water and energy snacks is essential. The reward for this strenuous climb is an absolutely breathtaking panoramic view of the Arkavathi River and the surrounding landscape. While challenging, the sense of accomplishment upon reaching the summit makes it a memorable adventure. The best time to attempt this trek is between October and February, as the rock can become dangerously slippery during monsoon and uncomfortably hot in summer.
Nandi Hills: The Accessible Classic
Nandi Hills is arguably the most famous weekend getaway from Bengaluru, and for good reason. It's the most accessible of the three, making it perfect for families, beginners, or those who prefer a scenic drive over a strenuous trek. You can drive most of the way to the top, with a short walk from the parking area to the sunrise viewpoints. For those who want to trek, there is a path with over 1,100 steps that takes about 45 to 60 minutes to climb. The gates officially open at 6:00 AM, but often open earlier on weekends to accommodate the sunrise rush. The main challenge here isn't the trail, but the crowds and traffic, especially on weekends. It's advisable to leave Bengaluru by 3:30 or 4:00 AM to get a good spot. The peak offers cool, misty mornings and beautiful views of the sun rising above the clouds. Beyond the sunrise, you can explore Tipu's Drop, the old fort walls, and various temples on the hilltop.
