is a secure digital record of your permission to travel, linked electronically to your passport. The shift is part of a broader UK government initiative to create a more streamlined and secure border. For the more than 500,000 Indian nationals granted UK visas in the year ending March 2026, this represents a fundamental change in how their immigration status is recorded and verified.
eVisa vs. ETA: A Key Distinction
There has been some confusion between the new eVisa system and the UK's Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), but they are not the same. The ETA is a pre-travel permit for nationals of countries who can visit the UK without a visa for short stays, such as citizens of the US, Canada, and EU nations. Indian passport holders are not eligible for the ETA scheme. You must still apply for a standard UK visa (e.g., for tourism, business, or study) through the established channels. The change is that once your visa is approved, the proof will be digital (an eVisa) rather than physical.
The New Application and Travel Process
The initial visa application process remains largely familiar: you will complete the form online, pay the fee, and attend an appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) to provide your biometric information (fingerprints and photograph). However, a significant advantage of the new system is that you generally no longer need to leave your passport at the VAC during the processing period. Once your application is successful, you will receive an email notification. You must then create a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account to access and view your eVisa details. Airlines will verify this digital status before you board your flight, making it essential that everything is in order before you head to the airport.
Your Pre-Flight Readiness Checklist
Under the digital system, preparedness is everything. Before you travel, you must ensure your details are accurate to avoid being denied boarding or facing delays at the UK border. First, create and log into your UKVI account as instructed in your visa decision email. Meticulously check that all personal details on your eVisa—your name, date of birth, and passport number—are correct. A mismatch between your eVisa record and your passport is a common reason for travel disruption. If you get a new passport after your eVisa is issued, you must update your UKVI account with the new passport details before you travel. Although the system is digital, it is wise to carry a printout of your visa decision letter or a screenshot of your UKVI account profile as a backup.
