The Rise of the Journey as the Destination
For a growing number of young Indians, travel is no longer about ticking off destinations from a bucket list. It's about the experience, the stories, and the journey itself. This shift has given rise to the 'slow travel' movement, which prioritises connection,
discovery, and a more relaxed pace. Unlike a flight that teleports you from one city to another, a train journey offers a front-row seat to the country's ever-changing landscapes. From the lush tea gardens of Assam to the coastal beauty of the Konkan route, trains provide an unfiltered view of the real India, something that is entirely missed from 30,000 feet. This generation, often feeling burnt out from a fast-paced digital life, is seeking travel that allows them to disconnect and unwind. A long train ride offers just that—a forced pause, a chance to read, reflect, and simply watch the world go by.
An Experience Made for Instagram
It’s impossible to talk about youth trends without mentioning social media. Scenic train travel, with its cinematic appeal, is tailor-made for a curated Instagram feed. Indian Railways has capitalised on this by introducing Vistadome coaches on several popular routes like Mumbai-Goa, Kalka-Shimla, and through the Araku Valley. These coaches, with their large glass windows, transparent roofs, and rotating seats, offer panoramic views that are incredibly photogenic. The resulting photos and Reels of mist-covered mountains, winding tracks, and breathtaking waterfalls have created a powerful visual pull. Routes like the UNESCO World Heritage mountain railways of Darjeeling, Shimla, and Nilgiri are not just modes of transport but iconic experiences that carry significant social currency. A trip on the Himalayan Queen or the Nilgiri Mountain Railway is as much a status update as it is a holiday.
Making Economic and Environmental Sense
Practicality also plays a major role. For young travellers, who often prefer taking multiple short trips over one long annual holiday, budget is key. Train travel is significantly more cost-effective than flying, especially for distances under 800 kilometres. A third AC ticket can be substantially cheaper than a budget airline ticket, allowing for more frequent getaways. This affordability democratises travel, making scenic routes accessible to students and young professionals alike. Furthermore, there's a growing environmental consciousness among Gen Z. For those concerned about their carbon footprint, the choice is clear. Trains are a more sustainable mode of transport compared to planes, and for many, this is a deciding factor in how they choose to explore the country.
A Window into India's Soul
Beyond the views and the value, train journeys offer a unique cultural immersion. A train coach is a microcosm of India, a place where people from different backgrounds, cultures, and regions come together. It’s where conversations with strangers spark easily, home-cooked food is shared, and friendships are forged over a cup of station chai. This social aspect is a powerful draw for a generation that seeks authentic connections. Travelling by train allows for spontaneous moments and interactions that are simply not possible in the sterile environment of an airport and airplane. It’s an opportunity to experience the country’s famed diversity firsthand, making the journey as enriching as the destination itself.
