The Scale of the Festive Rush
Onam is not just a festival; it's a homecoming. Every year, lakhs of students and professionals working in cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai, and Delhi travel back to Kerala to celebrate with their families. This creates an enormous surge in demand
for a limited number of train seats, with tickets on popular routes often getting booked out minutes after the reservation window opens. The result is an annual travel challenge where securing a confirmed ticket feels like winning a lottery, leaving many dependent on waitlisted tickets or expensive last-minute alternatives like buses and flights.
Over 100 Special Trains Announced
In a significant move to ease this congestion, Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that Indian Railways will operate more than 100 special train services for the Onam season. This initiative aims to provide safer and more affordable travel options during the festive period. While the high-level announcement brings relief, the specific routes, timings, and schedules for these trains are being released in phases by the various railway zones. This staggered approach is why travellers must remain alert and proactive.
First Services Begin to Roll Out
Southern Railway has already started notifying some of these special services. For instance, weekly special trains have been announced between Mangaluru Central and Chennai Egmore, as well as between Thiruvananthapuram Central and Tambaram. The Chennai Egmore-Mangaluru special (06125) will run every Tuesday from July 14 to September 1, while the return service (06126) will operate every Monday from July 13 to August 31. Additional services linking Chennai to Kollam have also been confirmed. Bookings for some of these trains have already commenced, highlighting the need for immediate action as soon as a relevant route is announced.
Where to Find Accurate Information
In the age of misinformation, relying on official sources is paramount. Travellers should regularly check the official websites of the railway zones, particularly Southern Railway (sr.indianrailways.gov.in), South Western Railway, and South Central Railway. The official social media handles, such as the X (formerly Twitter) account for Southern Railway (@GMSRailway), often provide the fastest updates. The National Train Enquiry System (NTES) mobile app and website are also essential tools for tracking real-time train schedules and announcements. Avoid relying on unverified WhatsApp forwards or third-party websites for booking details, as they may be outdated or inaccurate.
Tips for Successful Booking
When an announcement is made, speed is of the essence. Be prepared before the booking window opens. Use the IRCTC website or the Rail Connect app. Keep a 'Master List' of passengers with names, ages, and ID details saved in your IRCTC profile to auto-fill information quickly. Ensure you have a stable internet connection and use a fast payment method like UPI or a pre-loaded wallet to complete the transaction swiftly. If you are travelling in a group, try to have multiple people attempt to book tickets simultaneously to increase your chances. It is also wise to be flexible with your travel dates by a day or two if possible, as trains on weekdays might have slightly lower demand than those on Friday or Saturday.
Backup Plans and Alternatives
Despite best efforts, not everyone will secure a train ticket. It is crucial to have a backup plan. State-run bus services like KSRTC often announce their own special interstate services closer to the festival. While typically more expensive, private bus operators also add more services to meet the demand. If your budget allows, booking flights well in advance can sometimes be competitive with last-minute bus fares. Monitoring these alternatives early can provide a safety net and prevent last-minute travel anxiety. As more train announcements are expected in the coming days, keeping a close watch remains the best strategy for a happy journey home.
