from August 2026 shows the scheme has already crossed the 50 lakh household milestone, adding about one lakh new homes every six days. This incredible pace, a more than three-fold increase in daily installations over the last year, is a clear signal of the nation's commitment to clean energy and reducing electricity bills for millions. However, this success story hinges on a crucial, often overlooked, element: the people who actually do the work.
The Critical Workforce Gap
Beneath the surface of this green revolution lies a significant challenge: a glaring deficit of skilled labour. The rapid expansion has outpaced the availability of qualified technicians who can correctly install, commission, and maintain rooftop solar systems. Poor installation practices—from incorrect panel placement and faulty wiring to using substandard components—can drastically reduce a system's energy output and even pose safety risks. For India to realize the full potential of its solar ambitions, it needs more than just panels and policies; it needs a large, well-trained workforce. Recognizing this, the government itself has made skill development a core part of its strategy, planning to train an estimated 100,000 people to support the PM-Surya Ghar scheme alone.
Enter the Modern Solar Academy
In response to this demand, a new generation of solar training academies and skill development programs is emerging across the country. Institutions aligned with the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and government bodies like the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy are rolling out focused courses. Programs like the long-standing 'Suryamitra' initiative have already trained over 51,000 technicians, and new private and public courses are building on this foundation. These modern academies move beyond basic theory, offering hybrid models that combine online learning with intensive, hands-on practicals on actual rooftops. The curriculum is comprehensive, covering site assessment, installation, wiring, inverter commissioning, safety protocols, and maintenance.
From Trainee to Certified Technician
For a typical trainee, often a youth with a 10th pass or ITI background, a three-month certification course can be transformative. They learn to work with the latest tools, understand complex wiring diagrams, and adhere to national safety standards. Upon completion, they receive a certification that is recognized by solar engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) companies across India. This formal validation is key, as it not only proves their skills to employers but also enables them to participate in government schemes. With placement cells, industry tie-ups, and interview preparation, these academies provide an end-to-end pathway from classroom to career, helping graduates secure jobs and often command higher salaries than their uncertified peers.
