An Adventure on the Horizon
Rising to an altitude of over 1,226 metres, Savandurga is an imposing and impressive sight. Located just a 90-minute to two-hour drive from Bengaluru, it's an accessible destination for a day trip packed with activity. The hill is actually composed of two separate
peaks: Karigudda (the black hill) and Biligudda (the white hill). These granite giants form the core of the experience, offering different levels of challenge to aspiring trekkers. At the base, visitors are greeted by the historic Sri Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy and Savandi Veerabhadreshwara Swamy temples, some of which date back to the Hoysala period, providing a spiritual start to an adventurous day.
Choose Your Path: Biligudda vs. Karigudda
The most popular and accessible route is the Biligudda trail. It is well-suited for most trekkers, though still considered moderately difficult due to its steep, rocky inclines. The path is marked with painted arrows on the rocks, guiding climbers along the bare granite slopes towards the summit. In contrast, the Karigudda trail is steeper, less explored, and significantly more challenging, often requiring prior permission and even rock-climbing gear. For this reason, the majority of weekend trekkers opt for the rewarding journey up Biligudda, which typically takes between three to five hours for a round trip.
Trekking Through History's Footsteps
The Savandurga trek is more than just a physical challenge; it's a journey through centuries of history. The hill was once the site of a formidable fort, first constructed in the 16th century and later serving as a secondary capital for Magadi rulers like Kempegowda. Its strategic importance is evident in its name, which is sometimes translated as 'Savinadurga' or the 'Fort of Death', a nod to its steep, defensible slopes that made it nearly impregnable. As you ascend, you'll encounter the remnants of fort walls at several stages, silent stone sentinels that once guarded this stronghold. The fort later passed into the hands of rulers like Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan before being captured by Lord Cornwallis during the Third Anglo-Mysore War in 1791.
The Ultimate Reward: A Panoramic View
The effort of the climb is paid back tenfold upon reaching the summit. From the top, trekkers are rewarded with stunning 360-degree panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The vista includes the shimmering waters of the Manchanabele reservoir and the Arkavathi river snaking through the countryside. A small Nandi statue marks the pinnacle of the Biligudda trail, providing a serene spot to rest, absorb the scenery, and appreciate the feeling of accomplishment. This expansive view, stretching for miles under a clear sky, is the ultimate prize for every trekker who takes on the challenge.
Essential Tips for a Successful Trek
To make the most of your Savandurga adventure, preparation is key. Start your trek early in the morning, ideally by 6 or 7 a.m., to avoid the intense heat that radiates off the rock face later in the day. Sturdy trekking shoes with excellent grip are non-negotiable, as the granite slopes can be steep and slippery. Carry at least two litres of water per person and some energy-boosting snacks, as there are no food or water sources available on the trail itself. Wearing lightweight clothing, a hat, and sunscreen will protect you from the sun. While the Biligudda trail is marked, it's always safest to trek in a group and remain mindful of your footing, especially during the descent.
