Why Bank Account Validation Is Now Mandatory
The shift to electronic refunds is designed to make the process faster, more secure, and less prone to errors. However, for this system to work, the Income Tax Department needs to be certain that the bank account belongs to the taxpayer. This is where
pre-validation comes in. It is a one-time process that verifies your PAN is linked to your bank account and that the name on your PAN card matches the name on your bank account. Only a validated account can be nominated to receive an income tax refund. Without this validation, your refund will fail, even if your return is processed and the refund is approved. This step is not just for refunds; a validated account can also be used to generate an Electronic Verification Code (EVC) to e-verify your return, which is a mandatory step to complete your filing.
How to Pre-Validate Your Bank Account: A Step-by-Step Guide
Validating your account is a straightforward process done through the official e-filing portal. First, log in to the income tax portal using your user ID (your PAN) and password. Once on your dashboard, navigate to 'My Profile' and then select 'My Bank Account'. Here you will see tabs for 'Added', 'Failed', and 'Removed' bank accounts. Click the 'Add Bank Account' button. You will be prompted to enter your bank account number, IFSC code, and select the account type (e.g., Savings, Current). Ensure these details are entered with perfect accuracy. The system will auto-populate the bank name and branch based on the IFSC. After entering the details, click 'Validate' or 'Proceed to E-verify'. The portal sends this information to your bank for verification.
Checking Your Validation Status
After you submit the details, the validation is not instantaneous. It is an automated process that can take some time, often updated within a few days. You can check the status by returning to the 'My Bank Account' section. If successful, your account will appear under the 'Added Bank Accounts' tab with a status of 'Validated'. You may also see 'Validated and EVC enabled' if your mobile number and email on the portal match your bank records. You will also receive confirmation via SMS and email to your registered contacts on the e-filing portal. If the validation fails, the account will be listed under the 'Failed Bank Accounts' tab, along with a reason for the failure.
Troubleshooting Common Validation and Refund Issues
A validation request can fail for several reasons. The most common issues include a mismatch between your name as per PAN and your name in the bank's records, an incorrect account number or IFSC, or a PAN that is not linked to the bank account. Another reason for failure could be providing details for an inactive or closed account. If your validation fails, the portal will provide a reason. You can click the 'Re-Validate' option next to the failed account, correct the details, and submit the request again. If the issue is a name mismatch or an unlinked PAN, you will need to contact your bank branch to update your details before attempting to re-validate on the portal.
What Happens After Validation?
Once you have at least one 'Validated' bank account, you must nominate it for a refund. You can nominate multiple accounts if you wish. After you file your Income Tax Return and complete the e-verification, the Centralized Processing Centre (CPC) will process your return. This usually takes between four to five weeks, though it can be faster for simple returns or longer during peak seasons. Once the return is processed and the refund is confirmed, the amount will be electronically credited to your nominated and validated bank account. You can track the status of your refund through the e-filing portal by going to 'e-File' > 'Income Tax Returns' > 'View Filed Returns'.
