Choose Your Service Wisely
The first step is picking the right train for your needs. The new Vande Bharat Sleeper and Amrit Bharat Express trains cater to different travellers. The Vande Bharat Sleeper is a premium, fully air-conditioned service designed for high-speed comfort
on overnight journeys, featuring ergonomic berths, individual charging points, and better insulation against noise. In contrast, the Amrit Bharat Express is a more budget-conscious option, offering an upgraded experience over older trains with non-AC sleeper and general coaches, improved cleanliness, and modern toilets, but at conventional speeds. For a long-distance trip where comfort is the priority, the Vande Bharat Sleeper is the superior choice, though it comes at a higher fare. If you're on a tighter budget, the Amrit Bharat still represents a significant step up in quality for affordable mass transport.
Mastering the Booking Process
Securing the right seat is crucial for a comfortable journey, especially an overnight one. Always try to book your tickets as soon as reservations open—typically 120 days in advance—via the official IRCTC website or app, as preferred berths on popular routes fill up fast. For maximum comfort, a lower berth is often preferred. When booking, you can select your preference, but it's not a guarantee. To increase your chances, use the “Book only if at least one lower berth is allotted” option on IRCTC. This tells the system to only confirm your ticket if a lower berth is available. For senior citizens and women over 45, the system automatically prioritises lower berths, but this works best when booking for no more than two eligible passengers on a single ticket.
Pack for In-Transit Comfort
Smart packing can dramatically improve your onboard experience. A small 'comfort kit' can make all the difference. Essential items include a neck pillow, an eye mask, and earplugs to help you sleep through the noise and light. Even in AC coaches, the temperature can drop, so a light shawl or blanket is a wise addition. Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and a pair of slip-on shoes are also recommended for easily moving around the coach and for trips to the washroom. Hygiene is another key consideration. Pack hand sanitiser, wet wipes, and your own toilet paper roll. Finally, since you can’t always rely on the availability of power outlets, a fully charged power bank is a modern-day essential for keeping your devices running.
Managing Meals and Hydration
While new services like the Vande Bharat offer improved onboard catering, your food strategy deserves some thought. You can often pre-book meals when you buy your ticket. On some trains, you even have the option to opt-out of the mandatory food service if you prefer to bring your own. Even if you do opt for the provided meals, it's always a good idea to carry some of your own non-perishable snacks and a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated. This gives you a reliable backup and more control over your dietary needs during a long trip. For more variety, you can also use IRCTC's e-catering service to order food from restaurants at upcoming stations, which will be delivered directly to your seat.
Stay Entertained and Secure
A long journey is a great opportunity to catch up on reading, watch shows, or simply enjoy the view. Since onboard Wi-Fi can be unreliable, it's best to download movies, music, or podcasts to your device before you leave home. A good book or an e-reader is another excellent companion. While Indian trains are generally safe, it's prudent to take basic precautions. Keep your valuables with you, and consider using a small chain and lock to secure your luggage under your berth, especially during overnight travel. Arriving at the station at least 30 minutes early helps avoid last-minute stress, allowing you time to find your platform and coach without rushing through crowded terminals.
