For most, the Kalka-Shimla Railway is a nostalgic, leisurely ride through the Himalayan foothills, a journey back in time on a narrow-gauge track. In 2008, this reputation was cemented when it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized
for its engineering brilliance and historical significance in connecting the erstwhile summer capital of British India. But for the residents of the small towns and villages dotted along its 96-kilometre route, the train is not a novelty; it is a necessity. It represents a vital link for daily commuters, schoolchildren, and traders for whom the slow but steady train is often a more reliable and affordable option than road transport, especially during harsh weather. This dual identity is the key to its success and its status as a model for 'living heritage'.
An Enduring Engineering Marvel
Built between 1898 and 1903 under the direction of Herbert Septimus Harington, the railway was an audacious feat of engineering. To ascend over 1,400 metres from Kalka to Shimla, workers carved a path through the fragile Shivalik hills, constructing 102 active tunnels, over 800 bridges, and navigating 919 sharp curves. The longest of these, the Barog tunnel, stretches over a kilometre. This infrastructure, much of which is over a century old, requires constant maintenance and specialised knowledge to preserve. Its UNESCO status acknowledges not just its past glory but the ongoing effort to maintain it as a functional masterpiece of railway construction from a bygone era.
The Daily Rhythm of the Hills
While deluxe tourist coaches offer panoramic views, other services function as essential passenger trains for locals. These trains are the lifeblood for communities in places like Dharampur, Solan, and Barog, connecting them to jobs, markets, and education in both Shimla and the plains. The train's slow speed, averaging around 20 km/h, is a feature, not a bug, allowing for safe passage through the challenging terrain. It offers a dependable alternative to the often-congested and landslide-prone national highway that runs parallel to it. By remaining an active and integrated part of the local transportation network, the railway avoids becoming a static museum piece, ensuring its relevance and justifying the significant investment in its preservation.

The widening of the adjacent national highway has been blamed for destabilising slopes, increasing the risk of landslides onto the track. Furthermore, debates around modernisation, such as proposals to electrify the line to reduce pollution and increase speed, have raised concerns. Experts argue that such changes could compromise the railway's authentic character and damage its Outstanding Universal Value, which is crucial to its UNESCO status.
