The perennially popular journey between Bengaluru and Goa is about to get a significant upgrade. The Railway Board has approved a new Vande Bharat Express, establishing a new travel time benchmark of around 13 hours by rail.
The New Vande Bharat Connection
Indian Railways is set to launch
a new Vande Bharat Express service connecting Yesvantpur in Bengaluru to Madgaon in Goa. This semi-high-speed, chair-car train aims to provide a faster, more comfortable daytime travel option between the two states. The service, operating under train numbers 26655 and 26656, has been approved by the Railway Board and is expected to begin operations in the third week of November 2026. The service will run six days a week, with the journey from Yesvantpur to Madgaon taking approximately 13 hours and 20 minutes. The return journey from Madgaon to Yesvantpur is slightly shorter, clocking in at 12 hours and 55 minutes. This new train is an extension of the existing Mangaluru-Madgaon Vande Bharat service, which will be discontinued to make way for the longer route.
A Journey Through the Ghats
One of the most anticipated features of this new service is its scenic route. The train will travel through the heart of the Western Ghats, particularly the picturesque stretch between Sakleshpur and Subrahmanya Road. Passengers can expect panoramic views of lush green hills, dense forests, and the dramatic valley bridges that characterize this railway line. The route will also connect several key towns in coastal Karnataka, including Mangaluru, Udupi, Kundapura, Murdeshwar, and Karwar, fulfilling a long-standing demand for better connectivity between Bengaluru and the coastal region. This makes the journey not just a means of transport, but a scenic experience in itself.
How It Compares to Other Options
For decades, travellers between Bengaluru and Goa have weighed the pros and cons of road, rail, and air. Flights are the fastest option, with a journey time of just over an hour, but costs can be high. Road trips, either by bus or car, typically take between 11 and 13 hours, depending on the route and traffic. Existing train services, like the Yesvantpur-Vasco da Gama Express, take between 13 hours and 40 minutes to over 15 hours, often involving overnight travel. The new Vande Bharat service positions itself as a competitive alternative, offering a daytime journey that is faster than most existing trains and comparable in time to a road trip, but with the added comfort and amenities of a modern train.
Timings and What to Expect
According to the proposed schedule, the train from Yesvantpur (26655) will depart at 7:35 AM and arrive in Madgaon at 8:55 PM. This service will run every day except for Wednesdays. The return train from Madgaon (26656) will leave at 8:20 AM and reach Yesvantpur at 9:15 PM, running six days a week with a break on Thursdays. The train will have 12 intermediate stops, including Hassan, Mangaluru Junction, Udupi, and Karwar, enhancing connectivity across the region. While the service has been approved and trial runs are complete, the official launch date and ticket prices are yet to be announced by the Ministry of Railways.
