Two Parks, Two Personalities
Combining Satpura and Bandhavgarh in one trip offers a perfectly balanced wildlife experience. Bandhavgarh National Park, located in the Vindhyan ranges, is world-renowned for having one of the highest densities of Bengal tigers in India. Safaris here
are intensely focused on tracking these magnificent predators. You'll also find leopards, spotted deer (chital), sambar deer, and over 250 species of birds. Satpura Tiger Reserve, nestled in the Satpura Range, offers a different kind of wild adventure. While tigers are present, the park is celebrated for its incredible biodiversity and unique safari experiences. It's one of the best places in India to spot sloth bears and leopards. What truly sets Satpura apart are the activities: alongside traditional jeep safaris, you can explore the jungle on foot (walking safari), by canoe, or by motorboat on the serene Denwa River.
Choosing the Best Time to Visit
Both parks are open to visitors from October to June and remain closed during the monsoon season (July to September). The best time for your visit depends on your priorities. October to December: The forests are lush and green after the rains, and the weather is pleasant. This period is beautiful for photography and general wildlife viewing. January to March: The temperatures are cool and comfortable, making for pleasant safari drives. This is an ideal time for birdwatching, as many migratory species are present. Visibility in the forest starts to improve as the vegetation thins. April to June: These are the hottest months, but they often provide the best opportunities for tiger sightings. As water sources dwindle, animals congregate around the remaining waterholes, making them easier to spot. If you can bear the heat, your chances of seeing a tiger, especially in Bandhavgarh, are very high.
Crafting Your Itinerary and Logistics
A well-planned itinerary is crucial. Aim for a trip of at least 7 to 9 days to do justice to both parks. A typical plan would involve 3 nights in Satpura and 3 nights in Bandhavgarh, with a day dedicated to travel between them. The nearest major airport for Satpura is in Bhopal (around 3-4 hours drive), while the closest for Bandhavgarh is Jabalpur (around 3.5-4 hours drive). You can also reach the parks via train; the nearest station for Satpura is Pipariya (50 km), and for Bandhavgarh, it is Umaria (35 km). The drive between Satpura and Bandhavgarh is a long one, taking approximately 9-10 hours by road. It's best to hire a private taxi for this transfer. You can start early from one park after breakfast and aim to reach the next by evening.
Booking Your Safaris in Advance
This is perhaps the most critical step. Safari permits for all national parks in Madhya Pradesh must be booked online through the official forest department portal. Permits open 120 days in advance and get booked very quickly, especially for popular zones in Bandhavgarh. When booking, you will need to provide the full name, age, gender, and ID card number (like Aadhar or Passport) for each visitor. It is mandatory to carry the same ID with you during the safari for verification. For Bandhavgarh, focus on booking the core zones like Tala, Magadhi, or Khitauli for the best tiger sighting chances. In Satpura, ensure you book a mix of experiences: a jeep safari, a boat safari, and a walking safari to fully appreciate what the park offers.
Accommodation: From Rustic to Luxurious
Both parks have a wide range of accommodation options located near the main entry gates. You can find everything from budget-friendly guesthouses and state-run hotels to mid-range resorts and high-end luxury safari lodges. Many lodges offer all-inclusive packages that cover your stay, meals, and sometimes even the safari arrangements, which can simplify your planning. It's advisable to book your accommodation well in advance, especially during the peak season from November to March. Choosing a lodge close to your designated safari gate is crucial to avoid long travel times before your early morning safari.
