This year, however, Indian Railways is making a significant move to address the chaos. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that more than 100 special train services will be operated specifically for the Onam season. This large-scale intervention is designed to directly tackle the severe seat shortage and provide much-needed relief for passengers. The plan is to run these trains from various parts of the country to key destinations across Kerala, ensuring that more people have a chance to celebrate with their families without breaking the bank. Key Routes Announced So Far
The Southern Railway has already begun notifying specific services, giving travelers a concrete glimpse of what's to come. A weekly special train will connect Mangaluru Central and Chennai Egmore, running from mid-July through the beginning of September. This route is particularly significant as it addresses long-standing demands for better connectivity to the Malabar region of Kerala. Another pair of special trains has been announced between Thiruvananthapuram Central and Tambaram, providing a vital link for those traveling from the Chennai metropolitan area. Further services connecting Chennai Central with Kollam have also been confirmed, scheduled to run on select dates across July, August, and September. Bookings for some of these initial services have already commenced.
