Start Before You Leave
Great travel hair begins at home, well before you pack your bags. Giving your hair some attention beforehand sets a strong foundation for the journey ahead. About a week before your trip, treat your hair to a deep conditioning mask to boost moisture.
This is especially important if you're headed to a very dry or humid climate. Scheduling a quick trim to remove split ends can also make a world of difference, preventing further damage and making your hair more manageable from the start. If you use a lot of styling products, a clarifying wash before you leave will remove any buildup, allowing your hair to better absorb moisture during your trip.
Protective Styling is Your Friend
One of the best strategies, especially for long-haul flights, is to opt for a protective hairstyle. Styles like braids, twists, or a loose bun minimize exposure to the dry, recirculated air in a plane cabin, which is known to sap moisture from your hair. These styles also prevent tangles and reduce friction against your seat, which can cause breakage. For those with curly or coily hair, protective styles like box braids or cornrows are ideal for vacation as they minimize daily styling needs and protect hair from sun and salt water. Even a simple, loose braid secured with a soft, friction-free hair tie can significantly reduce stress on your strands while you travel.
Pack a Smart Hair Toolkit
You don't need to bring your entire bathroom cabinet, but a few key products can be lifesavers. Dry shampoo is a traveler’s best friend for absorbing oil at the roots and adding volume between washes. A good leave-in conditioner is also essential; applying it before and during a flight can counteract the drying effects of cabin air. Look for multi-purpose products, like a leave-in spray that also offers UV protection. To save space, invest in reusable, travel-sized containers for your favorite shampoo and conditioner, as hotel products can be harsh and strip your hair. Consider solid products like shampoo and conditioner bars, which are TSA-friendly and spill-proof.
Work With the Climate, Not Against It
Fighting your hair’s natural tendency in a new climate is a losing battle. Instead, adapt your routine. If you’re heading to a humid destination, don't waste time trying to achieve a pin-straight look that will frizz in minutes. Instead, embrace your natural texture. Pack an anti-frizz serum or spray to create a barrier against the moisture in the air. On the other hand, if your destination is dry, moisturizing products will be key. Lean into styles that work well with the weather, such as beachy waves in a seaside town or a sleek ponytail in a dry, urban environment. A stylish hat or scarf can also be a great accessory for protecting your hair from sun and wind.
On-Arrival Refresh
Once you've arrived, you might need a quick refresh rather than a full wash and style. If your hair was in a bun or braid during the flight, taking it down can reveal soft, heatless waves. You can revive limp hair by flipping your head over and applying a spritz of dry shampoo or a texturizing spray to the roots. For curly hair, a mist of water mixed with a small amount of leave-in conditioner can reactivate your curl pattern without a full wash. If you do need to wash your hair, consider using a microfiber towel or an old t-shirt to dry it, as the rough texture of standard hotel towels can cause frizz and breakage.
