Understanding the Festive Train Announcement
To handle the massive surge in passenger traffic during Durga Puja, Diwali, and Chhath Puja, Central Railway has announced it will run 418 special train services. This number does not mean 418 unique trains, but rather 418 individual trips or services scheduled
between October and November 2026. These trains are crucial for connecting Mumbai with high-demand destinations across states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka, providing much-needed capacity when regular trains are booked out months in advance. The services will originate from major Mumbai terminals including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), as well as from nearby hubs like Pune and Hadapsar.
Major Routes to North India
A significant portion of the festive rush from Mumbai heads towards Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. To cater to this, daily special trains have been announced for Gorakhpur. A total of 64 services will run between CSMT and Gorakhpur from mid-October to mid-November 2026. These trains will pass through key stations like Kalyan, Nashik, Bhopal, Kanpur Central, and Lucknow. Additionally, bi-weekly services are planned for other popular destinations in UP, including 24 special services between LTT and Banaras, and another 24 between LTT and Mau. For passengers heading to Bihar, there are direct special trains connecting Mumbai with hubs like Danapur, Samastipur, and Chhapra.
Connectivity to Southern and Western India
The festive specials also enhance connectivity to South and West India. For travellers heading to Karnataka, 14 weekly AC special services will operate between CSMT and SMVT Bengaluru. These trains will halt at important stations such as Pune, Miraj, Hubballi, and Dharwad. Similarly, passengers travelling to Tamil Nadu can avail themselves of 12 weekly AC services between CSMT and Chennai Beach. Within Maharashtra, several specials will improve intra-state travel. Key routes include 12 weekly services between CSMT and Kolhapur, 12 weekly superfast services to Nagpur, and 26 bi-weekly services connecting CSMT with Latur.
Essential Booking and Planning Tips
Securing a seat on these festive trains requires speed and strategy. Bookings for these special services open on staggered dates, primarily on September 27th and 28th, 2026, and can be made via computerized reservation counters or the official IRCTC website and app. Given the high demand, tickets are likely to be sold out within minutes. It is advisable to be logged in before the 8:00 AM booking start time with all passenger details saved in the IRCTC 'Master List' to speed up the process. These trains are operated as 'Special Fare' services, which means fares may be 10-30% higher than on regular trains. If you find yourself on a waiting list, monitor your PNR status regularly, as confirmations often happen closer to the travel date due to cancellations.
Tips for a Smoother Journey
Once you have your ticket, a little more planning can ensure a hassle-free trip. Always double-check your train's schedule and platform number on the day of travel using the NTES app or railway enquiry. Arrive at the station well in advance, as terminals like LTT and CSMT can be extremely crowded during the festival season. Pack light to navigate the crowds more easily. For unreserved travel, tickets can be booked through the UTS mobile app to avoid long queues at the counter. Also, remember to book your return journey at the same time as your outbound ticket, as finding a train back after the festivals can be just as challenging. Being prepared is the key to conquering the festive travel rush.
