What's Driving Global Oil Prices?
The primary drivers of the recent surge in oil prices are geopolitical instability and coordinated supply adjustments by major oil-producing nations. Brent crude, a key international benchmark, has climbed above $90 per barrel as of late August 2026,
while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) is trading around $85. This upward pressure is largely linked to heightened tensions in the Middle East, particularly concerning the Strait of Hormuz, a critical channel for about a fifth of the world's oil supply. Recent military actions in the region have stoked fears of wider conflict and potential supply disruptions, making markets nervous and pushing prices higher. Adding to this, a group of seven OPEC+ countries, including heavyweights Saudi Arabia and Russia, have been managing their output. While they agreed to a modest production increase for August, this follows a period of voluntary cuts designed to support and stabilize prices in the face of fluctuating demand. This careful management of supply, combined with geopolitical risk, creates a firm floor under prices, keeping them elevated.
From Crude Barrel to Your Vehicle's Tank
For the average Indian consumer, a rising global crude price doesn't translate to higher pump prices overnight, but the connection is direct. Indian oil marketing companies (OMCs) like Indian Oil, BPCL, and HPCL purchase crude oil in US dollars. When the international price of oil rises, their import cost increases. This cost, along with expenses for refining the crude into petrol and diesel, freight charges to transport the fuel across the country, and a profit margin, determines the base price charged to dealers. In a deregulated market, OMCs are meant to adjust their prices daily in line with these international rates. However, these adjustments are often paused or buffered, especially during periods of high volatility, with state-owned companies sometimes absorbing initial losses to shield consumers from sudden shocks. But these losses are not sustainable, and eventually, if high crude prices persist, the burden is passed on to the end consumer at the petrol pump.
The Decisive Role of Taxes
The price of crude oil is only one part of the story. A substantial portion of the final retail price of petrol and diesel in India is composed of central and state taxes. The central government levies a fixed excise duty on each litre of fuel, while state governments apply a value-added tax (VAT), which is a percentage and varies from state to state. This is why fuel prices can differ significantly between cities like Mumbai and Delhi. These taxes are a major source of revenue for both central and state governments. While the government has occasionally cut excise duty to provide relief to consumers during periods of extremely high prices, these cuts impact government revenue and create a difficult balancing act between managing inflation and maintaining fiscal health. Because taxes form such a large component, even a moderate increase in the base price of fuel can be magnified by the time it reaches the consumer.
The Ripple Effect Beyond the Petrol Pump
The impact of rising oil prices extends far beyond private cars and motorcycles. The cost of diesel is a critical operational expense for the transport and logistics sector, which moves everything from fresh produce to e-commerce packages across the country. When diesel becomes more expensive, freight costs rise. These higher costs are inevitably passed down the supply chain, leading to increased prices for everyday goods and contributing to broader inflation. Public transportation fares, including buses and even app-based ride-sharing services, may also increase to cover higher fuel expenditures. Furthermore, energy-intensive industries like paints, chemicals, and aviation face pressure on their profit margins, which can lead to higher prices for their products and services as well. A survey from earlier in the year noted that many consumers were already cutting back on non-essential travel due to rising fuel costs.
