The Alluring Promise of AI Itineraries
The appeal is undeniable: prompt an AI with a few desires—a week in Italy, focusing on food and history, with a budget of ₹3,00,000—and watch as a detailed, day-by-day schedule appears. Tools like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and dedicated travel AIs can generate
impressive starting frameworks, suggesting logical routes, attractions, and accommodations. This capability is a powerful brainstorming tool, saving hours of preliminary research and helping travellers discover destinations they might not have considered. Studies show a significant number of travellers now use AI to plan at least part of their trips, drawn by the promise of efficiency and personalised suggestions. These platforms are excellent for generating ideas and creating a foundational structure for your trip. However, the polished appearance of these itineraries can be deceiving, masking inaccuracies that range from inconvenient to trip-ruining.
The Non-Negotiable Visa Check
One of the most critical areas where AI cannot be the final authority is visa and entry requirements. While AI can provide general information, these regulations are complex, country-specific, and subject to change with no notice. Relying on a chatbot for this information is risky. An error in understanding your nationality's specific requirements can lead to being denied boarding or turned away at the border. Governments are increasingly using AI to manage visa applications and border control, making consistency and accuracy in your documentation more critical than ever. These systems can detect minor discrepancies in passport numbers or dates that a human agent might have previously overlooked. For definitive guidance, always consult the official embassy or consulate website for your destination country. Specialised visa services, which may use AI to monitor these official sources in real-time, can also be a reliable option, but a general-purpose AI chatbot is not a substitute for these primary sources.
Forecasting the Forecast
An AI might suggest a beautiful hike, but it may not have access to a real-time, hyperlocal weather forecast. AI weather prediction is rapidly improving and often more accurate than traditional models for general forecasts. However, these models are trained on historical data, which means they can struggle to predict unprecedented or extreme weather events. For travel planning, this means you can't rely on an itinerary generated weeks in advance. A seven-day forecast is only about 50% accurate. A recommendation for a beach day could easily turn into a washout. Always check reliable, local weather forecasts closer to your travel dates, and even on the day of the planned activity. This allows you to have a backup plan and adjust your AI-generated itinerary to match the reality on the ground.
The Peril of AI-Generated Reviews
AI tools often provide summaries of hotel or restaurant reviews, which seems like a great time-saver. However, recent investigations have shown this is a major pitfall. A July 2026 investigation by the consumer group Which? found that AI summaries on TripAdvisor tended to gloss over or completely ignore severe complaints, including food poisoning, poor hygiene, and even allegations of sexual harassment. In one case, a hotel subject to a lawsuit over mass food poisonings was described by the AI as “spotless.” The AI models, often trained to find the majority sentiment, can sanitise or downplay the sharp edges of negative feedback, presenting a misleadingly positive picture. This makes it crucial to scroll past the summary and read the actual reviews yourself, paying special attention to the most recent and the most negative ones to understand the full range of guest experiences.
Verification Is Your Responsibility
The recurring theme from travel experts is to treat AI as a launch point, not a final answer. Inaccuracies in AI-generated itineraries are common, with studies finding errors in up to 90% of plans. These can include recommending attractions on days they are closed, suggesting restaurants that are permanently shut, or creating illogical routes that require backtracking. Pricing for activities and hotels is also frequently underestimated. Before you book anything, you must cross-check every detail. Verify opening hours on the official website. Check hotel addresses and prices on the booking platform. Read reviews across multiple sites. Use AI for the broad strokes—inspiration, ideas, and structure—but rely on your own diligence for the details that matter.
