For years, the goal of many makeup routines was to create high-contrast drama—think of the carved-out cheekbones and heavily defined features that dominated social media. This new movement, often called 'soft glam' or 'soft sculpting,' is the antithesis
of that. It's less about transformation and more about subtle enhancement. The aim is to create dimension with a whisper, not a shout, using blendable formulas that melt into the skin to mimic natural shadows and light. This technique is seen as more wearable and realistic for daily life, focusing on a polished look that avoids harsh lines and heavy layers.
The Base: Luminous and Cloud-Like
The foundation for this trend is skin that looks healthy and radiant. Instead of heavy, full-coverage foundations, the focus is on lightweight formulas like skin tints, BB creams, and serums that let natural skin show through. This approach is often called 'cloud skin,' a finish that is luminous and hydrated but with a soft, diffused matte effect, like sunlight filtering through clouds. It’s achieved by balancing hydrating skincare with light makeup and, if needed, a minimal dusting of powder only where necessary to control shine, not to create a flat matte look. The goal is a velvety, semi-radiant finish that looks both flawless and effortless.
Cheeks: A Diffused Flush of Colour
Contouring isn't gone, it has just evolved. Soft sculpting uses cream bronzers and blushes that are one or two shades deeper than the skin tone to create a gentle lift. The product is often applied slightly higher on the cheekbones and blended upward toward the hairline to lift the face rather than hollow it out. Big, fluffy brushes are preferred over dense, sharp-angled ones to ensure the colour is diffused and seamless. Cream blushes in peachy or rosy tones are then patted onto the apples of the cheeks to add a healthy, natural-looking flush, contributing to the overall soft and dimensional effect.
Eyes: Hazy and Softly Defined
The sharp, graphic cat-eye is making way for softer, smudgier alternatives. A popular technique involves using a kohl or gel pencil eyeliner in a soft brown or grey and gently buffing it out with a small brush for a diffused, hazy effect. This provides definition at the lash line without any hard edges. For eyeshadow, the trend leans toward a simple wash of a single neutral colour across the lid, blended out for a soft finish. Brows are also part of the shift, with a move toward fluffy, feathery styles that are filled in naturally rather than being sharply drawn or blocked out.
Lips: Blotted, Blurred, and Stained
The era of the opaque, matte liquid lipstick with a precise liner is fading in favour of softer lip looks. The 'blurred' or 'blotted' lip, made popular by K-beauty trends, is a key part of this shift. This technique involves concentrating a lip stain or creamy lipstick at the center of the lips and then using a finger or a small fluffy brush to blend the colour outwards, leaving the edges soft and diffused. The result is a romantic, just-bitten look that enhances the natural shape of the lips without a sharp outline. Nourishing lip oils and glossy balms are also popular for a plump, hydrated finish that remains understated.
