E-commerce and Retail: The undisputed leaders
The twin engines of e-commerce and retail are generating the highest demand for freshers. A staggering 93% of employers in these sectors plan to hire new graduates, according to a July-December 2026 career outlook report. This boom is fuelled by India's
expanding digital footprint and growing consumer market. The roles in demand aren't always glamorous but offer a solid career foundation. Companies are actively seeking operations executives, supply chain trainees, last-mile delivery managers, and warehouse coordinators. These positions are critical for managing the massive scale of online shopping and require skills in logistics, inventory management, and problem-solving.
Manufacturing: The quiet powerhouse
Often overshadowed by the tech industry, manufacturing has emerged as a formidable force in fresher recruitment. With 89% of employers signalling an intent to hire, it stands as one of the strongest bets for new graduates in 2026. This resurgence is backed by government initiatives like the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes, which are boosting domestic production in electronics, automotive, pharmaceuticals, and textiles. Entry-level roles in this sector include junior semiconductor design engineers, inventory and dispatch executives, and automation engineers. For those with engineering and operations management backgrounds, this sector offers a tangible path to growth.
Information Technology: Still a giant, but more selective
The IT sector remains the largest absorber of engineering graduates, but the rules of the game have changed. While it still has a high hiring intent of 76%, this figure has seen a slight dip, indicating a shift from bulk hiring to strategic, skill-based recruitment. Companies like TCS, Infosys, and Wipro are still hiring tens of thousands of freshers, but they are no longer looking for generic coding skills. The real demand is for talent with specialised, future-ready skills. Proficiencies in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), cloud computing (AWS/Azure), data engineering, and cybersecurity are now the price of entry for the most coveted roles. Freshers who can demonstrate practical project experience in these domains will have a distinct advantage.
BFSI: Stability meets innovation
The Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance (BFSI) sector continues to be a pillar of the job market for commerce, economics, and MBA graduates. The industry is a blend of traditional banking stability and fast-paced fintech innovation. While hiring can be more selective compared to mass recruiters, opportunities for financial analyst trainees, banking associates, and risk and compliance associates remain plentiful. The rise of fintech startups has also created new roles in digital banking and operations. This sector rewards candidates with strong analytical thinking and communication skills.
Emerging and Core Sectors: A diverse landscape
Beyond the major players, several other sectors are actively seeking fresh talent. The CORE sector, which includes steel, power, and infrastructure, shows strong hiring intentions, driven by India's ambitious development projects. Healthcare and pharmaceuticals are also consistently hiring for non-clinical roles like hospital administration and medical sales. Even the travel and hospitality industry is making a comeback, with 81% of employers looking to hire freshers. These industries offer a wide array of roles, from digital marketing and data analysis to logistics and customer support, proving that opportunities for young talent are more diverse than ever.
