To understand why humidity is so draining, we first need to appreciate the elegant way our bodies stay cool. This process is called thermoregulation. When you get hot, your body’s primary cooling mechanism is sweating. As sweat evaporates from your skin,
it releases heat and lowers your body temperature. This system works wonderfully in dry conditions, allowing you to maintain a stable internal temperature whether you’re exercising or sleeping. During sleep, your core body temperature naturally needs to drop by a degree or two to initiate and maintain deep, restorative sleep. Efficient cooling is not just for comfort; it is a biological requirement for a good night's rest.
How Humidity Sabotages Sleep
High humidity, a hallmark of the Indian monsoon, throws a wrench in this cooling process. Humid air is already saturated with water vapour, which means there is little room for the sweat on your skin to evaporate. Instead of vanishing and taking heat with it, the sweat clings to you, leaving you feeling sticky and overheated. Your body, sensing that it isn't cooling down, keeps trying harder by producing more sweat and increasing blood flow to the skin. This constant, futile effort to regulate temperature puts your system under significant physiological stress, forcing it to work overtime when it should be powering down for the night. This makes it much harder to achieve the necessary drop in core body temperature required for sleep.
From Rest to Restlessness
This struggle to stay cool has a direct and disruptive impact on your sleep quality. Studies show that a hot and humid environment increases wakefulness and reduces the time spent in the most crucial stages of sleep: slow-wave deep sleep and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Slow-wave sleep is essential for physical recovery, including tissue repair and immune system support, while REM sleep is vital for memory consolidation and emotional processing. When your body is preoccupied with cooling itself, it can't fully descend into these deep, restorative phases. The result is a fragmented night of lighter, less efficient sleep, often punctuated by more frequent awakenings, even if you don’t fully remember them in the morning.

This is why you can spend eight hours in bed during a humid night and still wake up feeling as if you barely slept. The fatigue you experience isn't just in your head; it’s a direct consequence of your body being deprived of high-quality, restorative sleep. Your energy reserves are depleted from the body's overnight battle against the heat and humidity, and your brain and muscles miss out on the deep recovery they need. This can lead to daytime sleepiness, poor concentration, reduced physical endurance, and a general feeling of sluggishness that has come to be known as 'monsoon fatigue'. Tips for a More Restful Monsoon Night
While you can't change the weather, you can adjust your environment to fight back against the humidity. Using an air conditioner or a dehumidifier can make a significant difference in reducing the moisture in your bedroom. Opt for lightweight, breathable bedding made from natural fabrics like cotton or linen that wick moisture away from the skin. Taking a lukewarm or cool shower before bed can help lower your core body temperature, giving your body a head start on the cooling process. Proper ventilation is also key, so use fans to keep the air circulating. Finally, stay hydrated with water throughout the day, as your body loses fluids trying to cool itself, and dehydration can worsen feelings of fatigue.
