What is the New Visa-Free Rule?
Uzbekistan has introduced a new provision that allows Indian citizens to enter the country and stay for up to 30 days without an Uzbek visa. This isn't a universal visa waiver, but rather a special allowance for those who already hold certain international
visas. The change, which came into effect from September 1, 2026, aims to boost tourism and business ties between the two nations. The announcement was made following high-level talks between the leaders of India and Uzbekistan and confirmed by the Indian Embassy in Tashkent. This development significantly simplifies travel plans for many Indians who frequently travel internationally.
Who is Eligible for This Benefit?
To qualify for the 30-day visa-free stay, an Indian citizen must hold a valid, multiple-entry visa—either for business or tourism—from one of a specific list of countries. These countries are: the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and any of the Schengen Area member states. The visa from one of these countries must be valid at the time of entry into Uzbekistan. In addition to holding one of these eligible visas, travellers must also have a confirmed air ticket for a return flight or an onward journey to a third country. Indian citizens who do not meet these specific conditions are still required to obtain a standard e-visa or another appropriate visa to enter Uzbekistan.
How It Works in Practice
The process is designed to be straightforward for eligible travellers. Upon arrival at an international airport in Uzbekistan, you will need to present your Indian passport, your valid multiple-entry visa from one of the approved countries, and your confirmed onward or return flight ticket. As long as these documents are in order, you will be granted entry for a stay of up to 30 days. This rule effectively allows travellers to add an extended stopover or a dedicated trip to Uzbekistan without the need for advance visa paperwork, provided they are already holders of a visa for destinations like the US, UK, or Europe. It's a significant advantage for tourists planning multi-country trips or business travellers already in the region.
Other Options for Indian Travellers
If you don't hold one of the specified multiple-entry visas, there are still convenient ways to visit Uzbekistan. The country offers a straightforward electronic visa (e-visa) system for Indian citizens. The application can be completed online through the official government portal at least three working days before your intended travel date for a fee. For those simply passing through, Uzbekistan also offers a 5-day visa-free transit facility for Indian citizens at its international airports. This option is intended for travellers who have an onward ticket to a third country and allows them to explore briefly. However, the new 30-day rule provides a much longer and more flexible period of stay for a far greater number of potential visitors.
