A Nation's Health at a Crossroads
India is home to one of the world's largest youth populations, a demographic that is crucial for the nation's future. However, this vibrant generation is facing a growing health crisis. Lifestyle changes have led to an alarming increase in non-communicable
diseases (NCDs) like diabetes, obesity, and heart conditions at increasingly younger ages. Studies show that nearly two-thirds of premature deaths in adults are linked to behaviours initiated during youth. Issues such as poor nutrition, stress, substance abuse, and lack of physical activity are creating a silent epidemic that threatens not only individual well-being but also the country's long-term socioeconomic progress. This makes preventive wellness not just a healthcare goal, but a national priority.
What is ‘My Health, My Pride’?
The ‘My Health, My Pride’ initiative is a nationwide campaign by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, conducted through the National Service Scheme (NSS) and the MY Bharat platform. It is a key component of the larger 'Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat' (Drug-Free Youth for a Developed India) campaign. Its central message is that good health is a cornerstone for personal growth, success, and building a stronger nation. The campaign aims to transform health awareness into positive action by empowering young people to take ownership of their physical and mental well-being through informed choices and healthy habits.
A Focus on Action and Awareness
The campaign employs a multi-pronged approach that goes beyond just spreading information. It organises on-ground activities across educational institutions and villages nationwide. Key activities include free health check-ups and BMI assessments for young people, often conducted in collaboration with district health authorities. These screenings provide a tangible way for youth to understand their own health status. The initiative also features expert-led awareness sessions on critical topics like the importance of nutrition, the adverse health effects of addiction, and the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. By bringing medical professionals directly to the youth, the campaign bridges the gap between knowledge and practical application.
Building a Drug-Free and Resilient Generation
A significant focus of the ‘My Health, My Pride’ campaign is preventing substance abuse. It operates under the 'Prevent' pillar of the broader 100-week Nasha Mukt Yuva Abhiyan. The programme actively highlights the severe physical, psychological, and social damage caused by addiction. To reinforce this message, a key component involves participants taking a 'Substance-Free Pledge', committing to a life free from drugs. This act of public commitment aims to create a culture of accountability and peer support. The campaign promotes positive alternatives like sports, fitness, and constructive social engagement to steer youth away from harmful substances.
Early Impact and Grassroots Power
Launched in September 2026, the campaign has already shown significant reach. On September 25, activities were conducted across 167 educational institutions, engaging over 1,75,000 young participants. In these initial events, more than 48,500 youth received health check-ups, and over 60,000 took the substance-free pledge. A notable aspect is the high participation of young women, who accounted for over half of the attendees in the health and awareness sessions. By mobilising youth volunteers and local leaders, the campaign is building a grassroots movement, turning participants into health ambassadors who can inspire change within their own families and communities.
