It might not seem like much, but a single load of wet washing can be surprisingly full of water. Experts estimate that one load of laundry fresh from the washing machine can contain almost two litres of water. When you hang these clothes on a drying rack
inside your home, all of that water has to go somewhere. It evaporates into the surrounding air, increasing the room's relative humidity. Studies have shown that drying clothes indoors can raise the moisture level in a room by up to 30%. This process turns your living space into a temporarily humid microclimate, especially if the room is closed off with poor air circulation.
Why Damp Air Is a Health Concern
A little extra humidity might not sound dangerous, but it creates the perfect breeding ground for two unwelcome household guests: mould and dust mites. Mould thrives in warm, damp conditions and releases tiny spores into the air. These spores can grow on walls, ceilings, furniture, and even in window frames. Dust mites, microscopic creatures that feed on dead skin cells, also multiply rapidly in humid environments. Both mould spores and dust mite droppings are common allergens that, when inhaled, can trigger a range of health issues, particularly for those with existing sensitivities.
The Impact on Respiratory Health
For many, the first sign of a problem is a flare-up of respiratory symptoms. Inhaling mould spores can cause coughing, wheezing, sneezing, and a runny or blocked nose. For people with asthma, exposure to mould can trigger more frequent or severe attacks. The link between damp indoor environments and respiratory issues is well-documented, with studies showing a consistent association with problems like allergic rhinitis and bronchitis. Children and the elderly, as well as individuals with weakened immune systems, are particularly vulnerable to these effects. In some cases, a specific type of mould called Aspergillus fumigatus, which thrives in humid conditions, can cause serious lung infections in susceptible individuals.
Spotting the Warning Signs
Your home will often give you clues that the humidity is too high. The most obvious sign is condensation forming on the inside of windows. You might also notice a persistent musty or damp smell that lingers in certain rooms. Check for dark spots of mould growing in corners, on walls behind furniture, or around bathroom tiles. Wallpaper may begin to peel, and wooden furniture or fixtures might feel slightly damp to the touch. Recognising these signs early allows you to take action before the problem becomes more serious and widespread.
Smart and Safe Drying Solutions
While drying clothes outside is ideal, it’s not always an option. Fortunately, there are several ways to safely dry laundry indoors. The most crucial factor is ventilation. Open a window or use an exhaust fan in the room where clothes are drying to allow the moist air to escape. It’s also wise to give your laundry an extra spin cycle in the washing machine to remove as much water as possible before hanging it. When you place clothes on a rack, space them out to allow air to circulate freely between items. Avoid drying clothes in bedrooms or main living areas; a bathroom with an exhaust fan or a less-used, well-ventilated space is a better choice. For those in very humid climates, investing in a dehumidifier can be highly effective. It pulls moisture directly from the air, which not only helps clothes dry faster but also prevents the build-up of dampness that leads to mould.
