Know Your Airline's Rules
Before you pack a single item, know the limits. In India, most domestic airlines like Air India, Vistara, and IndiGo typically allow one piece of cabin baggage and a personal item. For carry-on bags, the weight is generally capped at 7 kg. Standard dimensions
are usually around 55 cm in height, 40 cm in length, and 20 cm in width. Always check your specific airline’s website before you fly, as rules can vary and change, but sticking to these general guidelines is a safe start. Your personal item, like a laptop bag or a small handbag, offers extra space for essentials you need to access easily.
Plan a Mix-and-Match Wardrobe
For a four-day trip, you don't need four distinct outfits. Instead, pack versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched. A good template includes two pairs of bottoms (like one pair of jeans and one pair of comfortable chinos), four tops that work with both bottoms, one lightweight dress or an extra smart shirt, and a single jumper or cardigan. Choose a neutral colour palette (black, navy, beige, white) for your core items and add personality with one or two colourful tops or accessories. This strategy ensures you have multiple outfit options without overpacking.
Master the Art of Rolling
The rolling versus folding debate has a clear winner for maximising space: rolling. Tightly rolling clothes like t-shirts, trousers, and dresses compresses the fabric and allows you to fit more into your bag. This technique is particularly effective for soft garments and also helps minimise wrinkles. For stiffer items like blazers or starched shirts, folding might be better. Place rolled items into your suitcase first, creating a dense base layer. This method transforms your packing process, letting you use every available inch of space.
Embrace Packing Cubes
Packing cubes are a traveller's best friend. These small, zippable pouches help you categorise and compartmentalise your belongings. You can use one cube for tops, another for bottoms, and a third for underwear and socks. This not only keeps your suitcase tidy but also compresses your clothes. When you arrive, you can move the cubes directly into hotel drawers, making unpacking a breeze. Some people even pack by outfit, grouping everything for a specific day into one cube. This system prevents you from having to rummage through your entire bag to find one item.
Be Smart with Toiletries
Liquids are often the biggest carry-on challenge. Remember the universal rule: all liquids, gels, and aerosols must be in containers of 100ml or less, and all containers must fit into a single, transparent, resealable plastic bag. To save space, ditch the liquids altogether where possible. Consider solid alternatives like shampoo bars, conditioner bars, and solid perfume. For everything else, purchase travel-sized containers and decant only what you need for four days. A multi-tasking product, like a moisturiser with SPF, can also save precious space.
Wear Your Heaviest Items
This is one of the oldest and most effective packing hacks. Your bulkiest items should be worn, not packed. If you’re bringing a jacket, a hoodie, or a pair of boots, wear them on the plane. Airplane cabins can get chilly, so wearing layers like a t-shirt, a sweatshirt, and a jacket is both practical for comfort and brilliant for saving luggage space. You can always take layers off once you're on board. This single trick can free up a significant amount of room in your carry-on, leaving more space for other essentials.
