What Are Smallsats, and Why the Hype?
Forget the bus-sized satellites of the past. The current revolution is all about 'smallsats'—a category that includes everything from microsatellites to even smaller nanosatellites or 'cubesats'. These compact devices are cheaper to build, faster to deploy,
and can be launched in large numbers to form constellations. Instead of relying on one massive, expensive satellite, companies and governments can now use a network of smaller ones for everything from Earth observation and weather forecasting to providing internet in remote areas. This shift has dramatically lowered the barrier to entry, transforming space from a final frontier for superpowers into a bustling commercial marketplace. For India, this means new capabilities in agriculture monitoring, disaster management, urban planning, and national security.
The Government's Green Light
This boom didn't happen in a vacuum. A series of landmark policy reforms, beginning around 2020 and culminating in the Indian Space Policy of 2023, fundamentally changed the game. The government officially opened the space sector to private participation, a domain previously monopolised by the venerable Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). A key move was the creation of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe). This body acts as a single-window agency to promote, authorise, and supervise the activities of private space companies, cutting through red tape and enabling a new ecosystem to flourish. Essentially, the government unlocked the door and handed the keys to a new generation of entrepreneurs.
Meet the New Space Pioneers
And entrepreneurs have rushed in. India now boasts hundreds of space-tech startups. Companies like Pixxel are making waves with their plans for a constellation of hyperspectral imaging satellites, which can see the Earth in hundreds of colours to detect things invisible to the normal eye, from crop diseases to hidden pollution. Dhruva Space offers full-stack space engineering, providing satellite platforms and launch services as a complete package. Meanwhile, startups like Skyroot Aerospace and Agnikul Cosmos are building a new generation of launch vehicles designed specifically for the small satellite market. Skyroot recently achieved a major milestone with the launch of Vikram-1, India's first privately developed orbital rocket. These companies are not just contractors; they are building end-to-end solutions.
ISRO's New Role: From Player to Coach
With the private sector stepping up, ISRO's role is undergoing a profound evolution. Far from being sidelined, the agency is embracing the position of a mentor and enabler. It is sharing its decades of expertise, opening up its world-class testing facilities, and even providing launch support to these fledgling companies. This symbiotic relationship is crucial. Startups can innovate at speed without having to build every piece of expensive infrastructure from scratch, while ISRO can focus on more ambitious deep-space exploration, strategic missions, and cutting-edge research and development. It's a strategic pivot from being the sole player on the field to becoming the coach of a burgeoning national team.
The Billion-Dollar Question
The economic potential is staggering. India's space economy, valued at around USD 8.4 billion, is projected to grow to over USD 40 billion by 2033. This growth is attracting serious investment, with venture capitalists pouring funds into the sector. The goal is to capture a larger share of the global space market, which is itself projected to surpass a trillion dollars in the coming years. By fostering a domestic industry for building and launching small satellites, India can serve not only its own needs but also become a cost-effective, reliable hub for international clients looking to send their payloads to space. Challenges remain, including launch capacity constraints and intense global competition, but the trajectory is clear.
