A World Record-Holding Marvel
The first thing that sets the Hon Thom cable car apart is its sheer scale. Officially recognized by Guinness World Records, it is the longest non-stop three-rope cable car in the world, stretching an astonishing 7,899.9 metres over the open ocean. This
nearly 8-kilometre journey connects the main island of Phu Quoc from a meticulously designed, Mediterranean-inspired station with Hon Thom, also known as Pineapple Island. The system, engineered by the renowned Austrian company Doppelmayr, uses advanced three-rope technology, which ensures a remarkably smooth and stable ride, even as it glides high above the water. This stability allows you to focus entirely on the spectacle outside your window, without the jostling common in smaller systems.
An Aerial Tapestry of Islands and Ocean
The 15-minute ride provides a 360-degree vista that is constantly changing. As the cabin ascends from the An Thoi station, you are treated to views of the colourful and architecturally unique Sunset Town below. Soon, the landscape transitions to a stunning seascape. You soar over the An Thoi archipelago, a cluster of 15 small islands and islets scattered like jewels across the emerald-green and turquoise waters. From this high vantage point, you can appreciate the clarity of the sea, sometimes spotting the dark patches of coral reefs beneath the surface or the colourful wooden fishing boats that dot the seascape, appearing like tiny toys from above. The journey takes you over several islands, including Hon Roi and Hon Dua, offering a glimpse of their lush, jungle-covered interiors and untouched coastlines.
A Unique and Unmatched Perspective
What makes the view truly 'unmatched' is the unique combination of height, distance, and scenery. While an airplane provides height, its speed and altitude offer a detached, fleeting view. A boat trip gets you close to the water and islands, but you miss the grand overview. The Hon Thom cable car exists in a perfect middle ground. The cabins glide at a comfortable pace, allowing ample time to absorb the scenery, take photographs, and truly appreciate the scale of the archipelago. With support pillars reaching impressive heights, you get a bird's-eye view that reveals the intricate patterns of the coastline and the vibrant ecosystem below without being thousands of feet in the air. This specific, sustained aerial perspective of a tropical island chain is an experience that is hard to replicate anywhere else in the world.
The Journey's Stunning Destination
The panoramic views don't end when the cable car docks. The destination, Hon Thom, is an integral part of the experience. Upon arrival, you are greeted by Sun World Hon Thom Nature Park. The park features Aquatopia, one of Southeast Asia’s most modern water parks, with over 20 slides and attractions for all ages. Beyond the water park, the island boasts pristine white-sand beaches like Bai Trao, where you can relax or engage in water sports like kayaking and snorkelling. There is also the Exotica Village, an adventure zone featuring Vietnam's first wooden roller coaster. The cable car isn't just a ride to a viewpoint; it's the gateway to a full day of activity, making the entire excursion a comprehensive attraction.
Tips for the Best Experience
To make the most of the panoramic views, timing is key. The best time to visit Phu Quoc is during the dry season, from November to April, when the skies are clear and the sea is calm. For the cable car ride itself, an early morning trip around 9:00 AM allows you to avoid the largest crowds and enjoy clear visibility before any midday haze sets in. Late afternoon is also a spectacular time, offering golden light that is perfect for photography as the sun begins to set. Be aware that the cable car typically pauses for a lunch break, usually between 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM, so plan your trip accordingly to avoid waiting. Booking tickets online can also help you bypass queues at the station.
