What is the New Integrated System?
The Income Tax Department has launched a unified 'e-Pay Tax' service on its official e-filing portal. This new module acts as a one-stop-shop for all direct tax payments. Previously, taxpayers often had to navigate multiple websites, like the NSDL portal,
to complete their payments. Now, the entire process—from generating a payment challan to making the actual payment—is consolidated within the main income tax website. This integrated approach is designed to reduce confusion and save time by bringing all payment-related activities under a single, user-friendly interface. Whether you are paying your regular income tax, advance tax, or TDS/TCS, it can all be done through this single gateway.
More Ways to Pay Than Ever Before
One of the most significant upgrades with the e-Pay Tax service is the expanded range of payment options. Taxpayers are no longer limited to just net banking or debit cards from a handful of authorized banks. The new system includes a versatile 'Payment Gateway' option. This allows payments through credit cards, UPI, and a wider array of debit cards and net banking services from various banks. Of course, traditional methods like Net Banking (from authorized banks), Debit Card (from select banks), RTGS/NEFT, and even over-the-counter payments at bank branches (using a pre-generated challan) are still available. This flexibility ensures that every taxpayer can choose the method that is most convenient for them. It is important to note that using the Payment Gateway option might incur additional transaction charges from the bank, which are not levied by the Income Tax Department.
How the New Payment Process Works
The process begins on the income tax e-filing portal, which you can access with or without logging in. You start by clicking on the 'e-Pay Tax' link. After verifying your PAN/TAN and mobile number with an OTP, you proceed to select the type of tax you need to pay, such as 'Income Tax'. You'll then choose the relevant Assessment Year and the specific payment category (like advance tax or self-assessment tax). The next step is to enter the breakdown of your tax liability, including tax, surcharge, and cess. After filling in the details, you generate a Challan Reference Number (CRN), which is mandatory for all payments under this system. With the CRN generated, you can then select your preferred mode of payment—Net Banking, Debit Card, Payment Gateway, or others—and complete the transaction. Once the payment is successful, a challan receipt is generated and can be downloaded for your records from the 'Payment History' section of the portal.
Key Benefits for Every Taxpayer
This new integrated payment system offers several clear advantages. The most obvious is convenience; everything is in one place, making the process intuitive and straightforward. The wide variety of payment options, especially the inclusion of UPI and credit cards, makes paying taxes as easy as any other online transaction. This single-portal approach also enhances security and transparency, as taxpayers can track their payment history and challan status directly on the e-filing website. By unifying the system, the department aims to reduce data entry errors and speed up the entire payment and reconciliation cycle, creating a more efficient tax administration ecosystem. For taxpayers, this means less hassle, instant payment confirmations, and a more streamlined compliance experience.
