What Is Bioastronautics and Space Medicine?
Bioastronautics is the specialized field of study focused on how spaceflight affects living organisms, particularly humans. It is a critical component of space medicine, which is a broader branch of occupational medicine that ensures the health, safety,
and performance of astronauts. Professionals in this field study the physiological and psychological challenges of space, such as the effects of microgravity, cosmic radiation, and isolation. Their goal is to develop technologies and medical solutions to keep astronauts safe, especially during long-duration missions that India is planning for the future.
The New Gateway: A First-of-its-Kind Fellowship
In a major boost for the field, the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) and the Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) Human Space Flight Centre (HSFC) have launched India's first Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme in Bioastronautics. Announced in July 2026, this programme is a direct response to the needs of the Gaganyaan mission and future human space exploration. The collaboration was formalised with an agreement signed in June 2026, building on a partnership that began in 2025. This initiative aims to create a pool of specialists trained to handle the unique medical challenges of human spaceflight.
Who Is Eligible to Apply?
The new Postdoctoral Fellowship in Bioastronautics is designed for highly qualified candidates. Eligibility is open to those who hold postgraduate medical degrees (like MD/MS), super-speciality medical qualifications, or a PhD in relevant scientific disciplines. The programme is highly selective, with only two fellows being chosen each year, starting with the July 2026 academic session. This exclusivity underscores the advanced nature of the research and training involved.
What the Programme Covers
This two-year fellowship is an intensive programme designed to provide a deep understanding of the changes that occur in human cells, tissues, and organs during space travel. Fellows will undergo specialised training and conduct research at both SCTIMST in Thiruvananthapuram and the HSFC in Bengaluru. The curriculum focuses on critical scientific questions related to astronaut health, covering topics like the physiological impact of microgravity and radiation, and the development of essential biomedical technologies for mission safety.
Beyond the Fellowship: Other Pathways
While the new fellowship is a significant opportunity, the primary route into this field in India has traditionally been through the Institute of Aerospace Medicine (IAM) in Bangalore, run by the Indian Air Force. IAM offers an MD in Aerospace Medicine, which is a highly competitive three-year postgraduate course. Admission requires an MBBS degree and a qualifying rank in the NEET-PG exam. Civilian doctors selected for this programme are typically required to serve in the Armed Forces for a specified period, as the course is primarily designed to meet the needs of the services.
Career Prospects in Space Medicine
Graduates in aerospace medicine and bioastronautics are poised for high-demand careers. Opportunities exist within ISRO to directly support the Gaganyaan programme and future missions. Other avenues include working with the armed forces as flight surgeons, joining regulatory bodies like the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), or contributing to research at organisations like the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). With the growth of commercial aviation and the dawn of space tourism, the expertise of these specialists will only become more valuable in both the public and private sectors.
