The annual festive season brings a familiar flurry of shopping and celebration across India. But beyond the bright lights and bustling markets, a quiet but significant shift is underway in how people think about the art of giving.
Redefining 'Value' Beyond the Price Tag
For a growing number
of Indian shoppers, the value of a festive gift is no longer measured by its price alone. The new focus is on deliberate, thoughtful consumption. A recent study highlighted that consumers are becoming more selective, paying closer attention to product quality, practical value, and the overall relevance of a gift. This shift means moving away from impulse buys and generic items towards presents that offer lasting utility or deep emotional connection. Gifting is evolving from a seasonal, transactional activity into an everyday expression of emotion, with a preference for items that are personal and not routine. The emphasis is on how memorable and meaningful the gift feels to the recipient, a sentiment that is reshaping the entire gifting landscape.
The Rise of Practical and Personalised Presents
One of the clearest trends is the move towards personalisation and genuine usefulness. A staggering 92 percent of shoppers report actively seeking unique, one-of-a-kind presents. This has fueled a boom in personalised gifting, a category that includes everything from engraved pens and custom notebooks to photo cakes and monogrammed accessories. Studies show that a majority of urban Indian consumers prefer personalised items, with many willing to pay a premium for them due to the emotional value they carry. This desire for usefulness also extends to corporate gifting, where generic sweet boxes are being replaced by practical items like kitchen appliances, smartwatches, and wellness products that employees can use long after the festival is over.
Investing in the Future: Gold, Tech, and Experiences
When it comes to long-term value, tangible assets remain a popular and trusted choice. Gold, in particular, continues to hold deep cultural significance. However, shoppers are adapting their approach to be more budget-conscious. Instead of large ornamental sets, many are opting for smaller, 'compressed purchases' like five-gram gold coins or lightweight 14-18K jewellery. Some are also exchanging old gold to finance new buys, ensuring the tradition continues in a more sustainable way. Beyond traditional assets, shoppers are also gifting items with a modern-day shelf life, such as the latest tech gadgets. Another growing category is experiential gifts, with 66% of Indians opting for presents like travel vouchers and entertainment packages that create lasting memories.
The Next Generation Drives a More Intentional Approach
This evolution in gifting is heavily influenced by India’s younger consumers, particularly Gen Z and millennials. A recent study on Gen Z found that while 60% increase their spending during festivals, their choices are highly intentional. Fashion and food top their spending lists, but gifting remains a significant category at 36%. For this cohort, family remains central, with parents being the primary recipients of gifts. However, they are also reinterpreting tradition; nearly half plan to buy healthy snacks during the festive season, showing that indulgence and wellness can coexist. This generation, which accounts for a massive portion of consumer spending, is balancing familial expectations with a desire for personal expression and making more deliberate choices.
