The World's Only Autumn Cherry Blossom
While Japan's famous cherry blossoms signal the arrival of spring, Meghalaya's bloom is a rare autumnal event. The flower is the Wild Himalayan Cherry, or Prunus cerasoides, a species native to the Himalayas that blossoms from late October into November.
This natural spectacle transforms the capital, Shillong, and the surrounding Khasi Hills into a dreamy pink landscape, a striking contrast against the post-monsoon greenery and clear blue skies. The weather in November is typically dry and pleasantly cool, with daytime temperatures hovering between 12°C and 20°C, making it ideal for exploring.
Shillong: The Heart of the Bloom
Shillong is the epicentre of the pink bloom, and the city celebrates with the annual Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival. The 2026 edition is scheduled for November 20th and 21st. This festival has grown into a major cultural event, attracting international music acts, and featuring food stalls, cultural performances, and art installations. However, you don't need a festival ticket to enjoy the scenery. The blossoms themselves are the main attraction, and they can be found all over the city, often for free. The festival itself is held at a dedicated venue, but the most picturesque blooms are often found in public spaces and along quiet roads.
Where to Find the Best Pink Views
To get the most out of your trip, it helps to know where to go. Ward's Lake is widely considered the most photogenic spot, where the pink-flowered branches reflect beautifully in the water. Other prime locations include the sprawling Shillong Golf Course, the area around the Polo Grounds, and the tree-lined road to Upper Shillong. For a wider perspective, a visit to Shillong Peak can offer panoramic views of the city dotted with pink. Even the drive from Guwahati Airport, the main entry point for most travellers, offers glimpses of the blooming trees along the highway.
Planning Your Autumn Trip
November is peak tourist season in Meghalaya, so planning ahead is crucial. The bloom typically peaks in the first half of the month, so arriving a few days before the festival can help you avoid the largest crowds while the flowers are at their best. Flights should be booked to either Shillong's Umroi Airport, which has limited connectivity, or the larger Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati, Assam, which is a scenic 2–3 hour drive away. Book your accommodations well in advance, as hotels in Shillong fill up quickly for the festival weekend.
Beyond the Blossoms
While the cherry blossoms are the star of the show, Meghalaya's clear autumn weather is perfect for exploring the state's other wonders. Use your trip as an opportunity to visit the famous Living Root Bridges near Cherrapunji, marvel at the crystal–clear waters of any Umngot River in Dawki, or explore any Mawphlang Sacred Grove, a protected ancient forest just outside Shillong. The state’s stunning waterfalls, like Nohkalikai Falls, are also still flowing from any recent monsoon rains, and any clear skies offer uninterrupted views of any region’s dramatic canyons and landscapes.
