Choosing to travel this route during the monsoon is a decision you won't regret. The entire region becomes a canvas of overflowing rivers, verdant paddy fields, and dramatic, rain-filled clouds. The highlight of this seasonal transformation is the waterfalls. The most famous of these is the mighty Dudhsagar Falls, which means 'Sea of Milk'. During the rains, it becomes a powerful, four-tiered cascade of white water thundering down from a height of over 300 metres. Witnessing this force of nature from a passing train is the main draw for many travellers.
Your Chariot: The Mandovi Express
The Mandovi Express is a popular daily train that connects Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) with Madgaon in Goa. The train, numbered 10103 when travelling from Mumbai to Madgaon, typically departs in the morning, which is ideal for sightseeing. This daytime schedule allows you to soak in the stunning Konkan scenery for a significant portion of the journey. The train offers various classes, including AC tiers and Sleeper Class, catering to different budgets. It has also earned a reputation among rail fans as the "Food Queen of Konkan Railways" for its catering services.
Booking and Seating: The Crucial Tips
To secure the best views, planning is key. First, book your tickets well in advance, as this is a popular route, especially during the monsoon. For an immersive experience, consider a non-AC sleeper class ticket to keep the window open, or opt for the Vistadome coach if available on your chosen service for panoramic views. The most important tip: for the Mumbai to Goa journey (Train 10103), try to get a window seat on the left side of the train. This will give you the best coastal and valley views. However, for the iconic view of Dudhsagar Falls, which is on a different section of the railway line, trains heading from Kulem towards Castle Rock offer the best spectacle from the right side. If your primary goal is Dudhsagar, you might need to plan a separate leg of the journey on a different train like the Amaravati Express.
Witnessing the Dudhsagar Spectacle
The awe-inspiring Dudhsagar Falls is not directly on the main Konkan Railway line but on the adjacent South Western Railway line between Kulem and Castle Rock. Many trains passing this section slow down, offering passengers a few precious moments to witness the waterfall in its full glory as the train crosses a viaduct. During the monsoon, access to the base of the falls via jeep safari is suspended for safety reasons, making the train the only legal and safe way to see it. Have your camera ready a few minutes after your train passes Kulem station. The train will navigate a few tunnels before the breathtaking view reveals itself.

A monsoon rail journey requires some specific preparation. Pack light, quick-drying clothes and sturdy, non-slip footwear. A raincoat and a small towel are essential, even if you're not getting off the train, as the spray from waterfalls and rain can enter through the windows. Carry a power bank for your devices, as the journey is long. It's also wise to bring some snacks and water. Be prepared for potential delays; the monsoon timetable often includes reduced speeds for safety, which can extend travel time.
