These alerts help you understand the potential impact and plan accordingly. For instance, an orange alert advises you to be prepared for disruptions, while a red alert signals a need for action to protect yourself. The app features radar imagery and satellite visuals, giving you a clear picture of weather patterns along your route. Be sure to enable location access and notifications to receive timely warnings specific to your area.
Specific Alerts for Thunder and Lightning
Monsoon storms often bring intense lightning, a significant risk for travellers, especially in open or elevated areas. To stay ahead of this threat, the 'Damini' app, developed by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), is invaluable. The app is designed to monitor lightning activity across India and can provide GPS-based notifications if lightning is detected within a 20 to 40-kilometre radius of your location. It can even offer warnings up to three hours in advance, giving you ample time to seek safe shelter. Considering that lightning is one of the single biggest natural killers in India, having this app on your phone is a non-negotiable safety measure during monsoon travel.
Assessing Landslide Susceptibility
For those venturing into hilly regions like the Himalayas or the Western Ghats, checking for landslide risk is as crucial as checking for rain. The Geological Survey of India (GSI) is the nodal agency for landslide studies and has been developing early warning systems. While a nationwide system is being progressively rolled out, travellers can use existing resources. The GSI, in collaboration with ISRO, provides valuable data through web portals. One key resource is ISRO's 'Bhuvan' geoportal, which includes a section for disaster services where you can find landslide inventory maps. These maps show historical landslide data, giving you an idea of which areas are prone to slope failure. For specific regions like Darjeeling and Kalimpong, the GSI has even launched a dedicated app called 'Bhooskhalan' and a portal named 'Bhusanket' for localised warnings. Before travelling through mountainous terrain, consulting these maps can help you identify high-risk zones along your planned route.
Real-Time Road and Traffic Conditions
A forecast is a prediction, but road conditions can change in an instant. Heavy rains can lead to sudden road closures, waterlogging, and traffic snarls. Navigation apps like Google Maps are indispensable for real-time updates. They use a combination of official data and user reports to mark road closures and show traffic congestion. Beyond navigation apps, social media can be a powerful tool. Local traffic police departments in many states actively post updates on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) about road blockages and diversions. Searching for relevant hashtags for your route (e.g., #HimachalRoads, #MumbaiTraffic) can yield on-the-ground reports from fellow travellers. Some regions also have community-driven platforms, like 'Himachal Road Status', which provide crowd-sourced updates on blockages from landslides or floods.
On-the-Ground Awareness and Flexibility
Technology is a powerful ally, but nothing replaces situational awareness. While driving, especially in the hills, be vigilant. Look for warning signs like cracks in the road, leaning trees or electric poles, and unusual changes in the colour or flow of stream water, which could signal an unstable slope. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) often issues advisories urging travellers to avoid mountainous areas during periods of heavy rain. Always heed local advice and warnings from authorities on the ground. It's wise to build buffer time into your itinerary, as delays are common. Avoid driving at night in hilly areas, when visibility is poor and risks are higher. If a road looks flooded, do not attempt to cross it. Always have a backup plan and be prepared to change your route or delay your journey if conditions become unsafe.
