The Perfect Travel Storm
Several factors are converging to create a surge in domestic travel demand immediately following the festive season. The period from mid-November through December is not only a popular time for leisure trips but also coincides with the peak wedding season,
which drives significant bookings in key destinations. On top of this, there is sustained demand from the corporate sector for meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) events. This combination of leisure, wedding, and business travel creates a powerful demand wave that the hotel industry is preparing for. Hotel groups are reporting that festive season bookings are already pacing 15-25% ahead of last year, signalling a very busy period ahead. Experts note that improved infrastructure, especially better highway connectivity, is also encouraging more people to take drive-to holidays, further boosting occupancy in destinations accessible by road.
Where Prices Are Spiking
Unsurprisingly, India’s most beloved holiday spots are at the epicentre of this price surge. Goa is expected to see the steepest climb, with some forecasts predicting premium hotel rates in the state could jump by over 40% in the latter half of November compared to the pre-Diwali period. Other traditional vacation destinations are not far behind. Hill stations like Ooty and Mahabaleshwar, along with the royal retreats of Rajasthan such as Udaipur and Jaipur, are also bracing for significant price hikes. Beyond the usual suspects, a broader travel trend is emerging. Spiritual and pilgrimage sites like Puri, Rishikesh, and Ujjain are seeing a remarkable increase in visitor interest, as travellers look to combine faith with their holidays. Similarly, wildlife sanctuaries including Gir, Pench, and Tadoba are gaining traction among those seeking nature-focused escapes. This diversification of travel interests means that increased prices won't be limited to just beaches and mountains.
How Much More Will You Pay?
The numbers paint a clear picture of what to expect. According to industry data, average rates for mid-scale hotels across popular leisure destinations are projected to increase by nearly 27% during the post-Diwali weekend rush from November 11-15. Premium and luxury properties are likely to follow a similar trajectory, with average daily rates jumping from around ₹26,000 to over ₹31,000 in the same period. Some reports suggest that across the board, hotel rates during the Diwali period are already about 30% higher than usual. This trend is expected to continue through the end of the year, with Christmas and New Year's Eve likely to see even steeper increases, potentially reaching 40% above regular rates. While some hotel chains are forecasting a more modest average rate increase of 8-10% compared to last year, they admit that prices on peak dates could be significantly higher.
Smart Strategies for Travellers
Navigating this expensive travel landscape requires some savvy planning. The most effective strategy is to book as early as possible. Prices for both flights and hotels climb steadily as the travel dates approach, with the biggest jumps happening in the final few weeks. If your travel dates are flexible, consider travelling on weekdays instead of weekends, as demand and prices are typically lower. Another smart move is to explore alternative or emerging destinations. While Goa and Udaipur are perennial favourites, consider looking at less-crowded beach towns or exploring the growing circuits in states like Karnataka or Madhya Pradesh. The rise of quality homestays and alternative accommodations also provides a viable option, often at a lower price point than traditional hotels, especially in areas where hotel room shortages are common. Finally, keep an eye out for package deals from travel companies, which can sometimes offer better value by bundling flights and accommodation.
