Your New Tool for Food Safety
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has launched the 'Food Safety Connect' initiative, a digital platform designed to empower consumers. Available as both a mobile app and a web portal, it serves two primary functions: allowing you
to verify the authenticity of an FSSAI licence and providing a streamlined channel to report any food safety violations you encounter. This initiative aims to create a more responsive and transparent food ecosystem by making every citizen a partner in upholding safety standards.
How to Check a Food Business's Licence
Verifying a food business operator’s (FBO) licence is a simple way to ensure they are registered and compliant. Every licensed food business, from restaurants to packaged goods manufacturers, is required to display a 14-digit FSSAI number. To check it, visit the FoSCoS portal (foscos.fssai.gov.in) and look for the 'FBO Search' feature. Enter the 14-digit licence number, complete the captcha, and submit. The portal will display details like the business name, address, type of licence, and its validity status. If the details match, the licence is valid. If it shows 'No records found,' the number may be fake. You can also perform an advanced search using the company's name and location if you don't have the number.
How to Report a Food Safety Violation
If you encounter poor hygiene, an expired product, misleading labelling, or food adulteration, you can file a formal complaint. Download the 'Food Safety Connect' app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, or visit the consumer grievance portal. After creating an account, select the option to lodge a new complaint. You'll need to provide details about the food business, including its name and address. Entering the FSSAI licence number is helpful if you have it. Next, choose the relevant category for your complaint and describe the issue.
Providing Evidence and Tracking Your Complaint
To strengthen your complaint, it is highly advisable to provide evidence. The platform allows you to upload supporting documents like photos, videos, or a copy of the bill. Once you submit the form, a unique tracking number will be generated. You can use this ID on the portal or app to monitor the status of your complaint as it is forwarded to the relevant authorities for investigation. This tracking feature ensures you remain in the loop throughout the resolution process.
What Happens After You File a Report?
Once submitted, your complaint is forwarded to the concerned food business operator for an initial response, with a copy marked to the State Food Safety Commissioner. If the response is unsatisfactory or no action is taken, the complaint can be escalated to state authorities for further action, which may include on-site inspections, sample testing, and investigation. Depending on the severity of the violation, FSSAI can issue warnings, impose fines, suspend licences, or initiate legal proceedings against non-compliant businesses. If you are not satisfied with the final resolution, you have the option to escalate the matter further.
