The New 30-Day Visa-Free Rule
Uzbekistan has introduced a significant policy change allowing certain Indian citizens to enter the country without an Uzbek visa for a period of up to 30 days. This development, confirmed by the Embassy of India in Tashkent, is a major step towards boosting
tourism and business ties between the two nations. The announcement was made following high-level talks between the leaders of both countries, aimed at strengthening people-to-people connections. Previously, most Indian travellers had to navigate the e-visa or standard visa application process. This new rule simplifies travel for eligible individuals, making spontaneous trips and business travel much more convenient.
Who Is Eligible For Visa-Free Entry?
The key detail of this new policy is that it is not a blanket visa-waiver for all Indian passport holders. To qualify for the 30-day visa-free stay, an Indian citizen must hold a valid, multiple-entry visa for specific countries. These accepted visas include those issued for business or tourism by the United States, the United Kingdom, Schengen Agreement member states, Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, and the Republic of Korea. If you possess a valid multiple-entry visa from any of these nations, you can enter Uzbekistan without needing to apply for a separate visa. Indian citizens who do not meet this specific requirement must still obtain an appropriate visa as per Uzbekistan's standard guidelines.
Mandatory Conditions You Must Meet
Even for eligible travellers, there are a couple of important conditions to meet. First and foremost, you must have a confirmed air ticket for your return flight to your country of origin or an onward ticket to a third country. This is a mandatory requirement to prove your intent to leave Uzbekistan within the 30-day period. Secondly, while the stay is visa-free for up to 30 days, all visitors staying for more than three days are required to register with the local Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. This is typically handled by your hotel or host, but it is the traveller's responsibility to ensure it is done. Always carry a printed copy of your registration with you.
What If You Don't Qualify?
If you don't hold one of the specified multiple-entry visas, travel to Uzbekistan is still straightforward. The country offers an efficient electronic visa (e-visa) system for Indian citizens. You can apply online through the official portal (e-visa.gov.uz) at least three working days before your planned departure. The standard tourist e-visa is typically valid for 30 days. For those with specific transit plans, Uzbekistan also provides a five-day visa-free transit facility at its international airports, provided you have an onward ticket and the airline has informed border authorities. So, even if the new conditional visa-free rule doesn't apply to you, there are still convenient options available.
