A Landmark Connection Realised
The launch of the Vande Bharat service to Srinagar marks the culmination of the monumental Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project. Declared a National Project in 2002, this 272-km railway line was one of the most challenging engineering
feats undertaken by Indian Railways, designed to provide reliable, all-weather connectivity to the Kashmir Valley. Previously, the valley was often cut off from the rest of the country during harsh winters when heavy snowfall on the NH-44 highway would block road access for days. The service, which initially began between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Srinagar in mid-2025, was extended to Jammu Tawi in April 2026, creating a direct link between Jammu and Kashmir's two capital cities.
Route, Schedule, and Journey Time
The Vande Bharat Express significantly cuts down travel time, replacing a gruelling 8-to-11-hour road journey with a comfortable train ride of approximately 4 hours and 50 minutes. Two pairs of trains currently operate daily services between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar, except for Tuesdays. The main morning service, Train No. 26401, departs from Jammu Tawi at 6:20 AM and reaches Srinagar at 11:10 AM. The return service, Train No. 26402, leaves Srinagar at 2:00 PM, arriving in Jammu Tawi by 6:50 PM. The route includes stops at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, Reasi, and Banihal. Following recent approvals, a third Vande Bharat service is set to be introduced which will also include a stop at Udhampur (Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan station).
An Engineering Marvel of a Journey
Passengers on this route will witness some of India's most incredible engineering achievements. The journey includes traversing 119 km through tunnels and crossing over 900 bridges. The highlights are two iconic structures: the Chenab Rail Bridge and the Anji Khad Bridge. The Chenab Bridge, the world's highest railway arch bridge, stands 359 metres above the riverbed, making it 35 metres taller than the Eiffel Tower. The Anji Khad Bridge is India's first cable-stayed railway bridge, another stunning example of modern engineering. The train itself reaches speeds of nearly 100 km/h on sections like the Chenab Bridge, offering both efficiency and breathtaking views.
Special Features for a Unique Terrain
The Vande Bharat rakes operating in Kashmir are specially designed to handle the region's extreme weather. They are equipped with advanced heating systems to prevent water lines and bio-toilets from freezing and to ensure comfortable temperatures for passengers in sub-zero conditions. The driver's cabin features heated windshields to defrost glass and maintain clear visibility during snowfall and frost. The trains are built to be operational in temperatures as low as -20°C and are also designed to be earthquake-resistant, a crucial feature for the seismically active zone. The coaches offer rotating seats and large windows, allowing travellers to fully immerse themselves in the panoramic landscape.
Booking Your Ticket: Fares and How-To
Booking tickets for the Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat is straightforward via the IRCTC website or the Rail Connect mobile app. Passengers can choose between AC Chair Car (CC) and Executive Chair Car (EC), which offers wider, more spacious seating. Fares can vary slightly based on the specific train and dynamic pricing, but as a guide, Chair Car prices range from approximately ₹715 to ₹880. Executive Chair Car fares typically fall between ₹1,320 and ₹1,515. Bookings open 60 days in advance, and it is highly advisable to book early, especially during peak tourist seasons like summer and the Amarnath Yatra.
