A New Era of All-Weather Connectivity
For decades, reaching the Kashmir Valley meant either a flight or a long, often unpredictable road journey on National Highway 44, which could be shut down for days due to snowfall at the Jawahar Tunnel. That has now changed. The Vande Bharat Express
service from Jammu Tawi to Srinagar, which became fully operational in April 2026, offers the first reliable, all-weather rail link to the valley. The service drastically cuts the grueling 8-11 hour road trip to a comfortable train ride of just under five hours, making the journey itself a part of the holiday. Due to immense popularity, the initial services have already been expanded, with a third Vande Bharat train for the route approved in August 2026.
The Vande Bharat Experience: Built for Kashmir
This isn't just any Vande Bharat train; it's a marvel of engineering specifically designed for Kashmir's unique climate. Manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory, the train is built to operate in extreme cold, withstanding temperatures as low as -20°C. It features an advanced heating system to prevent water lines and bio-toilets from freezing, and even the driver's windshield is heated to stop fogging and ensure clear visibility. Onboard, passengers can expect the signature Vande Bharat comfort with large panoramic windows, rotatable seats, and Wi-Fi. The Executive Chair Car offers wider, more spacious seating, and on-board catering often includes a taste of local Kashmiri cuisine.
A Journey Across Engineering Marvels
The route itself is a spectacle. As part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, the train traverses some of the most challenging terrains in the Himalayas. The journey includes passage through 38 tunnels and over 900 bridges. The two standout highlights are the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world's highest railway bridge standing 359 meters above the riverbed, and the Anji Khad Bridge, India's first cable-stayed railway bridge. Recent trials have seen the Vande Bharat successfully cross the Chenab Bridge at speeds nearing 100 kmph, showcasing the incredible stability and quality of the infrastructure. Traveling this route offers breathtaking views that were previously inaccessible.
How to Plan and Book Your Trip
Booking your journey on the Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat is straightforward. Tickets can be booked through the IRCTC website or the Rail Connect mobile app. You will need to use the station codes JAT for Jammu Tawi and SINA for Srinagar. The service runs six days a week, with no service on Tuesdays. Train number 26401 departs Jammu Tawi in the morning, arriving in Srinagar before noon. Fares for the AC Chair Car (CC) are approximately ₹715-₹880, while the Executive Chair Car (EC) costs around ₹1,320-₹1,515. It's advisable to book well in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons, as the trains have been running at full capacity since their launch.
Insider Tips for Your Journey
To make the most of your trip, a little planning goes a long way. When booking your seats for the journey from Jammu to Srinagar, try to get a window seat on the right side of the train for the best views of the magnificent Chenab Bridge. On the return journey, the left side offers better vistas. Remember to carry a valid government-issued photo ID, as it is checked during the journey. Since the train passes through varying altitudes, it's wise to wear layers of clothing. Finally, be aware that mobile signals can be patchy, especially inside the long tunnels like the 11-km Pir Panjal tunnel, so it's a good idea to download any entertainment beforehand.
